The Chinese zodiac is a traditional

https://preview.redd.it/5eep830aa5kh1.png?width=1012&format=png&auto=webp&s=3169ced3dc633668d1e4e9f4807b807bb45e379a

Some scholars suggest the twelve animals were chosen for their symbolic traits, based on their revered status in traditional Chinese culture. The choice varied regionally before being standardized in the Han Dynasty, when the Chinese zodiac, as an essential part of Chinese culture, started to take shape. This era formalizes a twelve-year cycle, where each year is associated with a specific animal, as part of a timekeeping system. This system, known as the zodiac cycle, combined the twelve Earthly Branches  with the ten Heavenly Stems  to create a 60-year cycle, a cyclical timekeeping system seen as embodying both personality traits and the broader society. Each Earthly Branch was linked to one of the twelve zodiac signs and to an animal: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.

Male roosters...do they tend to be womanizers out of ALL the zodiacs?

Now before you say "no we'd have to look at the full chart before arriving to that kind of conclusion" I believe that men with roosters (particularly if it's in the year I've noticed) tend to be a little more, let's just say "invested" in other women, wandering eyes even if he's in a relationship. The water ones are even more extreme.

What do you guys think?

Statistics and Chinese Divination: Where They Overlap—and Where They Don’t

I recently posted a response pushing back on the claim that “Chinese divination is basically statistics,” and it sparked more debate than I expected.

First, I want to correct something I said before—and apologize for not phrasing it carefully enough.

I previously said that divination is not statistics. That was too absolute.

Many traditional Chinese divination systems do involve ways of thinking that resemble classification, induction, conditional reasoning, and the accumulation of experience. In that sense, there is some real overlap with statistical thinking.

But these systems originated and developed long before statistics existed as a modern academic discipline.

I graduated from the University of Washington with a major in Quantitative Economics and a minor in Informatics. My coursework involved a fair amount of statistics, econometrics, mathematics, and economics.

Anyone who has studied economics, finance, data science, or a related field will understand that academic disciplines are rarely isolated from one another. They constantly borrow methods, concepts, and tools from neighboring fields.

At the same time, I’m currently studying Da Liu Ren 大六壬 under a teacher. Da Liu Ren is one of the ancient Chinese “Three Styles” of divination and one of the oldest and most structurally complete systems that has survived into the present.

So I’m not approaching this as someone trying to use science to “debunk superstition.” Nor am I arguing that traditional knowledge is somehow superior to modern science.

It is precisely because I have spent time studying both that I have come to believe this:

Statistics and traditional divination do share certain features. But saying that divination is simply a form of statistics forces two fundamentally different systems of knowledge into the same category.

Let’s look at the question from both sides.

First, statistics.

Suppose someone asks me a very simple question:

>

From a statistical perspective, the first step would not even be to make a prediction.

The first step would be to define the variables.

What exactly counts as “finding a job”?

Does receiving an offer count, or only formally starting the job? Does part-time work count? What about self-employment? What is the time frame—three months, six months, or one year?

In statistics, if the dependent variable has not been clearly defined, then any discussion about predictive accuracy is almost meaningless.

The next step would be to define the population and the sample.

Are we studying American college graduates in 2026, or Chinese college graduates? People of all ages, or only recent graduates? Computer science majors, or workers across every industry?

When the population changes, the probability changes.

Then we have another important concept: the base rate.

Suppose 80% of people in a certain group will find a job within the next year.

Even if I know absolutely nothing, I could tell every person:

>

I might still be correct 80% of the time.

So from a statistical perspective, saying “I predicted correctly many times” does not, by itself, prove that a predictive method is useful.

The real question is:

Does this method perform better than a simple baseline prediction?

In other words, does it have any incremental predictive power?

This already reveals an important difference between modern statistics and traditional Chinese divination.

Now let’s look at Da Liu Ren.

When Da Liu Ren is used to judge a question about employment, it does not begin by collecting data from ten thousand people with the same age, education, location, and career background, and then calculating their average probability of employment.

Instead, it constructs a system involving the Heaven and Earth Plates, the Four Lessons, the Three Transmissions, and the Twelve Heavenly Generals. The practitioner then selects the relevant symbolic category for the question and interprets its strength, weakness, interactions, transformations, timing, and relationship to the overall structure of the chart.

In other words, it first constructs a system of symbols, correspondences, and analogies. The judgment is then made within the internal logic of that system.

That is not the same inferential path as drawing a sample from a population and using data to estimate a probability distribution.

Some people may respond:

>

This is exactly where the distinction matters most.

Empirical induction is not the same thing as modern statistics.

Human beings were identifying patterns from experience thousands of years before statistics became a formal discipline.

A farmer reading clouds to anticipate the weather is using empirical knowledge.

Ancient Chinese physicians accumulating medical case records were using empirical knowledge.

People observing the relationship between seasonal cycles and crop growth were also using empirical knowledge.

But that does not mean they were all practicing modern statistics.

What modern statistics adds is a formal framework for quantifying, controlling, comparing, and testing the patterns that people believe they have observed.

There is also a more direct problem.

Suppose we insist that Da Liu Ren was created from thousands of years of accumulated historical cases.

That immediately creates a statistical question:

Can an ancient sample be used to predict modern people?

When someone in ancient China asked about their official career, they might have been asking about the imperial examination, receiving an appointment, entering the service of an official, or being promoted within the bureaucracy.

When someone today asks about their career, they may be asking about getting into a tech company, working in investment banking, starting a business, taking a civil-service exam, or becoming a freelancer.

On the surface, both questions concern “career.” Statistically, however, they may not represent the same outcome at all.

Over several centuries, political institutions, education systems, occupational structures, labor mobility, and economic conditions have all changed dramatically.

In modern statistics and machine learning, we might describe this as distribution shift: the process generating the data has changed.

You cannot train a model on Ming-dynasty imperial examination outcomes and then, without any new validation, use it to predict whether a university graduate in 2026 will get hired by Google.

So if someone insists that traditional divination is nothing more than ancient big-data analysis, that creates a serious problem:

If the data-generating process has changed so dramatically, why should the model still work?

And this is precisely why traditional divination does not explain itself in those terms.

Da Liu Ren speaks in terms of Heaven and Earth, yin and yang, the Five Phases, generation and control, the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, time, space, and symbolic correspondence.

You may accept that framework or reject it. But within its own intellectual tradition, it does not claim:

>

I therefore don’t think respecting traditional knowledge means forcing it into whatever modern terminology happens to sound most credible.

Statistics has its own language.

Traditional divination has its own language.

The two can be compared. They may be able to learn from one another. Some claims made by traditional divination could even be tested using modern statistical methods.

But these are two very different statements:

>

and

>

The first is reasonable.

The second requires much more justification.

I’ll end with a line from Chapter 71 of the Tao Te Ching:

>

This is not a call to stop asking questions. It is a reminder that genuine inquiry often begins by recognizing the boundaries of our knowledge.

Ancient knowledge does not need to be renamed “modern statistics” in order to have value.

Modern statistics does not need to explain every traditional system of divination.

To see where the two are similar, while still understanding that they are built on different foundations, is a more serious form of intellectual respect.

Do not force ancient ideas into modern terminology, and do not use ancient claims as a substitute for modern evidence.

BaZi 10 year luck cycle

I have a question about the ten year cycle.

My current one was 2017 to 2026. And my next cycle is 2027 to 2036.

So when does the next cycle officially begin? I was told that the energy of the next cycle is already almost here. And that 2026 is a crucial breakthrough year.

So does the next cycle for me begin at the start of the Chinese New Year in 2027? Or does it begin on my birthday in 2027? Or is it already underway?

Thank you.

Rooster-Tiger and Rooster-Rabbit both put Metal over Wood. Only one is a clash

I've been building a 12-sign compatibility matrix, and these two pairs are a useful test of which rule should take precedence.

Rabbit and Rooster are 卯 and 酉, a direct clash. Tiger and Rooster are 寅 and 酉, with no trine, secret friend, clash, harm, or punishment set between them.

The fixed elements look identical in both cases: the Rooster is Metal, while Rabbit and Tiger are Wood. Metal controls Wood.

If that element relation produces the same verdict for both pairs, the branch layer has been erased. If only formal branch relations count, every unbonded pair becomes a blank.

The rule I am testing is:

  1. A formal branch relation sets the baseline.
  2. The fixed elements qualify that baseline.
  3. For a pair with no formal relation, the elements can describe pressure, but they do not invent a clash.

That leaves Rabbit–Rooster as challenging and Tiger–Rooster as workable, with pressure but no inherited conflict. The practical reading for Tiger–Rooster is that Metal can prune Wood or damage it. Critique helps after the Tiger has made something; during the generative stage, it can cut the work back to nothing.

Disclosure: I'm testing this rule in Jade Almanac's compatibility engine before I finish the last three of the 66 sign pairs.

For people who work with year-sign compatibility, would you grade no-bond pairs from the fixed elements at all, or leave them neutral until the full BaZi charts are available?

Which is more accurate? The true solar time or local time when assessing a Bazi chart?

I was born at a time where it falls into Rooster hour based on true solar time or Dog hour if it’s based on local time. Any insights on which is more accurate? I provided life events in case it helps to determine which is the right hour pillar.

- May 2019: My dad passed away

- May 2026: Diagnosed with Primary Hyperparathyroidism

- July 2026: Successful parathyroid surgery

- Sept 2026: Going back to school to change careers into healthcare

- (Not sure if this matters since hour pillar I heard represents children) As a personal choice, I won’t be having children. I do, however, adore animals especially cats. But I do want a happy harmonious marriage, just one that is a bit unconventional.

- I also value a high quality of life. A high quality of life to me is a life of wellbeing, happiness, freedom, and supportive connections. These values are what I take into consideration when making any kind of decision in my life.

The chart said my worst years were "Metal clashing Wood"(金克木) -- I checked past years of my life against my Da Yun (大运)

Every chart-reading tool I've tried will happily tell you what your next decade holds. None of them will tell you how to check whether it's any good before that decade arrives. So I tried the opposite direction: instead of asking my chart about the future, I asked it about chapters I've already lived - and scored it like a test.

That's called retrodiction — using a model to describe events that already happened, as a sanity check on whether the model deserves trust. In Bazi terms, each decade of your life runs a Da Yun (Luck Pillar) that rebalances the chart's elements, and those are fully checkable against your past.

Rules I set before running anything:

  1. A claim only counted if it named a specific life domain — career, relationships, health, or money. "A period of change" didn't count.
  2. Misses counted exactly the same as hits. No revising the interpretation afterwards.

What my chart claimed, in outline: ages 12–21 run heavy Water — deep study, absorption, payoff delayed until later. Ages 22–31 run clashing Fire — upheaval, breakups, career rework — and at some point "Metal clashes Wood": cutting ties with something that held me back for years.

The Water decade was almost boringly accurate. I spent 12–21 studying hard, and it only started paying off long after, exactly as described. And the hardest five years of my life — a toxic job I stayed in far too long before leaving — fell precisely inside the stretch my chart called "Metal clashing Wood." I gave the system nothing but a birth date, time, and place. It still found the exact stretch I'd rather forget.

Scored against every claim I could actually check, it came out 5 right, 1 wrong, 2 too vague to judge.

The miss is the part I trust most. The chart puts heavy weight on the father star and claimed my father is distant and barely involved in my life. In reality he's intense and central to mine. The system was flat-out wrong there — which is exactly what you want to see in a test: a failure mode you can name, not vague drift.

That isn't proof of anything. But it's a much higher bar than "this vaguely fits," and it's why I've started taking the framework seriously enough to keep testing it forward. Has anyone else tried scoring Da Yun against their actual past?

Luck Pillar vis-a-vis 4 Pillars

Can someone please explain to me how my luck pillars (or path) affected my 4 pillars (vehicle)—both during my teenage years (at 12) and present (22)?

What does Axe Yang Metal and Tiger Yang Wood have, that made my teenage years the way it is?

And what about the path I am currently walking on (Soil Yin Earth, Ox Yin Earth)?

Can someone explain why a peach blossom in the day or hour is considered bad?

I’ve seen that a peach blossom that is in the day or hour is considered “Peach Blossom Outside the Wall" and seen more negatively. I have an activated peach blossom in my hour pillar, combining with my day pillar. Dragon daymaster, Rooster hour. Can someone explain its impact and why this is typically seen as a negative thing?

Confusing thing about zodiac

Don’t understand the Chinese zodiac well so apologies if this is not a good question. Most of the zodiac guidance I have seen on career is from the perspective of a working person. Is there ever general career guidance that applies to persons not working but looking for work. Or maybe generic enough for both. Thanks.

I want to talk about those Travel China Guide-style compatibility guides.

I do want to preface that, let's say if you're a Monkey with an Ox or a Rat with a Rabbit reading this and each respective partnership is going good for you, then my props to you.

You know how the compatibility guides you see by places such as Travel China Guide are arranged? I noticed some of these so-called "best matches" derail outside the typical theory of San He (3 harmony) compatibility (those four to eight years of separation), punishments, and Liu He (6 harmony), and nobody talks about it. Here's what I pointed out.

1.) In photo one, why does Rabbit take up two pillars in relation to the Horse, with the first photo showcasing rabbit in both "Best Match" and "So-So"?

2.) Aside from Rooster, Rabbit's secondary enemy, if taking six-harm theory into account, would be delegated to Dragon. Snake would share neither a trine harmony nor six harmony, but also neither a punishment, destruction, clash, nor harm in regards to the Rabbit.

3.) Monkey's so-called "best matches" in both photos are two signs that derail from both the Three- and Six-Harmony theories, showcasing a five to seven year separation with ox and rabbit. If one took that same number of years for separation in effort of finding best matches like done to Monkey here, but it was changed to Tiger, you'd get Goat and Rooster, which it doesn't showcase as the "best matches" in either chart.

4.) Dog's "best match" in both depicted charts is the Rabbit, which at least does take the six-harmony theory into account. In the first photo, why is dog listed as a mere "so-so" in relation to horse, one of its fellow trine members, and why doesn't it show up in any of the tiger's slots?

5.) In photo two, Rabbit takes up not just the "best match" spot in relation to the Monkey and Horse, but also, the Rat. If Rabbit shows up as one of the "best matches" for Horse in these charts, how is it not the other way around that in this case, Horse shows as a best Rabbit match? Some of these guides would list Rat as a best match for Rabbit, but these that list Rat as best may also lump Monkey in as another best. This chart seems to ignore the punishment formed between Rat and Rabbit and the destruction formed with Horse and Rabbit. In photo two, how does Rabbit replace Monkey as a Rat match, unlike in photo 1?

6.) Why does Dragon take place of both Dog in relation to Tiger and Ox in relation to Snake? In all fairness, the snake is essentially Dragon Lite in the zodiac and is one to eleven years away from snake.

7.) In both photos, Rabbit's "bests" does take the three-harmony (pig and goat) and six-harmony (dog) into account, but both also somehow add monkey, with Rabbit making the best list for the same four, but also, the rat and the horse in photo two, meaning in it, Rabbit would be listed as a "best one" for half the zodiac.

please give me some hope / advice. what do I do? wasn’t it supposed to get better for snakes?

Mind you, not a single tarot / astrological / psychic forecast I have ever read has come true, never. I wanna keep believing in magic but it’s hard to do when nothing ever comes true. I’ve been promised love, good karma, justice and karma on those who hurt me, success, health, abundance etc. so many times, and nothing. I am loosing faith. And yet when (in the past) I have given my charts and my BaZi and other things to different AIs, I was told my natal chart, my BaZi astrology or the fact that I was born under the first solar eclipse of the 21st century made me special.

I am hoping somebody here would be able to give me advice. Offer any words of wisdom. The last 10 years of my life have been filled with on and off depression and desires to die, even during supposedly good periods. Haven’t had a truly good periods since 2021-2022. 10 years ago I got diplopia that doctors still can’t figure out. I can’t see without ridiculously heavy and thick glasses, it is the worst. I was 14, and due to being harassed at school, and all the shit that was happening at home, parents fighting, me becoming my mothers emotional help, therapist, punching bad and more, etc. I got severely depressed and stressed, and my vision began to double. I have been her emotional-crap carrier (especially when it comes to her horrible relationship with my father) ever since, not to mention all the endless emotional and mental abuse I had to face from both my “loving” parents.

In 2021, I was in my second year of university, and I was about to begin my 3d year of studies, but I had to quit uni and come back home because my father was fired. As I found out later, they fired him for stealing big sums from the company that was feeding him and his family. This man has had the audacity to call me ungrateful and a piece of shit after I couldn’t even finish my education because of what he did.

I’ve been stuck here, living with my parents ever since. In the last 5 years, I have had to face extreme loneliness, betrayal, lies, gossip, heartbreak, best friends ghosting my existence like I don’t matter, other best friends ending up horrible people to the point where I had to break up with them (my best friend in the whole wide world ended up being a cruel zionist who makes jokes about kids being bom*ed), guys never being interested in me unless they were creepy fuckboys (I have been single for 10 years), my health worsened, my diplopia, I got kyphosis, I’ve switched so many jobs and have been broke countless times, or whenever I had money I couldn’t enjoy it because I was working myself till exhaustion, my mental health took a new plummet down into hell, my ADHD and depression are the worst they’ve ever been.

This April I was fired (they told me to sign the resignation letter) from my job after I got diagnosed with neurosis, apparently they couldn’t let me just work from home, so they told me to quit, even though I did the work of at least 3 people for them, while getting payed for the work of one. For the last 2 years I’ve been looking for a job in London, wanting so truly to move there, seeing signs and even having a BaZi AI tell me London is perfect for me, for countless reasons, but in February-march, I stopped applying for jobs and gave up because I got tired of hearing negative shit from my mother (anything negative she’s ever said about me always manifested, even if it wasn’t true), she kept on telling me how I am wearing rose coloured glasses and how I’ll never find s job in London because it’s unrealistic.

For the last year and a half I’ve been studying Italian in order to get into a university in Italy for free (you can study for free if you know the language), not because I initially wanted to, but because mother made me study it, since its the “only realistic way” out of our country. So, my focus shifted from London, to Italy. I recently took my exam and I freaked out so bad during it that I forgot everything I knew and probably flunked it. I’m still waiting for results. I am terrified.

I turned 25 late June. To recap?

  1. No close real friends nearby, the only real ones I have all live overseas now, and everyone is too tired to text. I don’t remember the last time I’ve had stress-free or guilt-free fun.
  2. No romance or love in my life, I literally don’t remember what it feels like to be loved, kissed, held, to cry on a guys shoulder, its been 10 fucking years of bad luck and unreturned love and sheer nothingness.
  3. No job and about 15 dollars on my card. I have a small business which could be profitable but I don’t even work on it because I fell so behind my initial 2026 plans that it’s freaking me out and I avoid it due to guilt and panic.
  4. No bedroom of my own, I have been sleeping on a 22 year old couch all these years that I’ve been stuck here
  5. Not even normal eyesight or healthy posture, and I’m too tired and lazy to do anything about it, I am exhausted. I have to wear 18-prism glasses and my optometrists expects me to have the discipline to stare at dots on a wall for 25 minutes every day because it *might* help me a little bit. I have a bump on my neck which I can’t get rid of cause I cannot afford physio therapy.
  6. No degree to my name. (Thank you for being a thief dad)
  7. My burnout has turned into full blown laziness and avoidance and I avoid both working on my small business, working out, reading, I am lazily looking for a job, not answering messages from people for weeks on end and much more. The only thing my depression hasn’t ruined is my hygiene routine. I avoid all of life and then hate myself for it, and then continue avoiding it.
  8. I have no motivation to live whatsoever, on my worst days the only thing that stops me from killing myself is the thought of not wanting to traumatise my little sister, whom I love so so much, I would never want to her hurt and so I stay here, for her.

And mind you, what I shared here is just the tip of the iceberg I managed to type out without loosing my cool due to the memories. I would be so upset about how shitty my life is if the world was in a better place, but it’s not. War, genocide, the planet is literally burning, plants and animals dying everyday and going extinct, human trafficking, PDFiles everywhere, the world is in a disgusting condition. Opening the news literally makes it feel like we’re all doomed.

What the fuck do I do? Because I have tried everything, western astrology, Chinese astrology, magic, spells, rituals, manifesting and then fully detaching from what I want, playing as if, writing letters to my future self etc. I have no hope left. Is there anything good that’s coming in my life? Anything? Love hopefully? Or a job where I am not abused and overworked? Anything that would give me joy or hope or would feed my soul? Will I make it to Italy this year? Or London? Because according to all western astrology and BaZi experts, I should’ve had my dreams come true at least 3 years ago, every year since then, with every fucking year and planetary transit my sign / placements are promised the best of things and all I get is shit, shit and more shit. I used a BaZi Ai once and told it my full story and it told me that if I put in the work, I will make it to London (which is full of water energy) and it will heal me, since not only do I have a lot of fire in my chart, I also live in the land of fire (Azerbaijan) and I am severely burned out. I was convinced that back then, my dream would come true

. Anytime something good happens, it falls apart very quickly after. I am tired. Please tell me something good is coming.

Every time I ask for advice people flood me with Pinterest quotes such as “don’t give up!” And “keep going!” (Brilliant pieces of advice, apparently untreated depression is that easy to get rid of), or they tell me its all temporary and it’s simply the dark night if the soul (how can a dark night last so fucking long), or some other fluffy BS that only makes me feel worse. I am tired. I am not doing shit yet I am tired, I am existing and not doing much on the daily yet I am as exhausted as a construction worker at the end of a long week. And nothing anyone says helps. No online stranger, astrologer, tarot reader, nobody. Nothing anyone has ever said worked.
