It was inevitable…

I have so enjoyed, Rolo, that it is time for number 2.

Putting together the ReptiZoo, 20 gallon, encourages me to promote the ease of assembly and quality of the enclosures. Front opening, heavy mesh lid, and vent for wiring. The stacker is great for space saving.

Going with the ReptiEarth, MicroChip and sphagnum moss mixture, as I did for Rolo.

The baby won’t arrive until early September, so I have plenty of time for hides, water bowls and plants.

Moving on up…there is hope.

Rolo was on a food strike for a little over two months. I posted on his refusals and what I tried, and with expert council he returned to eating in July.

I wanted to post here that he just moved up in mouse size today from small fuzzies to medium fuzzies.

I can’t wait to weigh him Sunday to see what he weighs. Arrived in mid-February at 41g and last week was 59g…with a consistent food routine I look forward to him growing.

PS. Oddly, there were no real changed in husbandry that changed his desire to eat. I would say that if you do make adjustments isolate the changes one at a time, so that it is easier to identify what made the difference.

Excuse me…a little privacy.

I swear he is thinking,”Would you stop staring?”

So good to see him out and about after his shed.

Rolo and his new suit

My boy shed for the first time with me and it went exceptionally well. He had his humid hide and the humidity was bumped up a bit.

He reappeared yesterday and had a fuzzy. I found his shed and he left his spots behind. 🤣

Awaiting his first shed

My boy ate on Tuesday and I picked him up Friday to weigh him. So happy to see his belly was grey. He has been hiding since, I await his first shed with me…can’t wait to see his new suit.

Judging me…

Rolo just hanging out before mealtime…I am sure he is judging me. What else could you be doing?

On the topic of hunger strikes…there is hope.

Thank you all that provided insight into this first time hoggie owners dilemma of the hunger strike.

Rolo stopped taking the offerings on March 31st…fast forward to today, yes June 06. He happily accepted the 4g pinky offering.

What worked? The slightly above room temp thawed pinky. 1 1/2 weeks of no contact other than habitat maintenance.

The weekly offering of week 1-3 small pinky, 4-6 week large pinky, 7th week ReptiLink (nope) and 2 weeks of not offering. I even tried sushi grade tuna…somewhere along the way. Container outside of habitat or in - no difference.

The increase temp suggestion 82-85 on cool end and 95 in basking area…made no difference, as I practiced that for most of May.

Adding more clutter he just hid more.

All in all the message is there is no “one size fits all” to the solution. Husbandry is not always the issue, but does apply to some situations.

They exist to have us adore thee and for them to vex us…that is all😂.

The king of his castle

A few pics from Rolo’s digs…I have been swapping out decor and adding different types of clutter.

The substrate varies from 3”-6” as I know snek parents are sensitive to this. I love looking in the morning to see his latest entrance and exit points.

Now if I can only get him to break his hunger strike…

Would love to hear about what you think of his digs.

In my stick ball

I purchased some decorative balls for a table centerpiece and this vine ball was in the bag. I snipped some areas away so that he had entry points and exits.

He slithered over it and around it for weeks, but now uses it as a 4th hide.

So spoiled two molded hides, a cork ball and his “sphere.” Added more clutter today as well…didn’t notice that the vines look like cannabis.🤣

Height of habitat

Looking for advice…when I got my boy in February his enclosure was up on a dresser. He was at eye level for when I checked on him, filled water and fed him.

I realized that his hunger strike coincided with the fact that I moved his enclosure to a lower height so I didn’t have to use a step to clean his habitat.

The location is the same… for veteran keepers is this random that his hunger strike started after I changed the height of his house?
