5, 10 or 40 gallon enclosure for baby hognose?

I'm looking to setup an enclosure for a baby hognose. I've read conflicting info about sizing the enclosure. It seems like I have two options:

  1. Set up a 5 gallon enclosure to start. Some people argue this is better because they are less stressed in a small area and you can more easily manage their needs in a smaller enclosure. Some argue this is worse because setting up a proper temperature gradient in such a small space is tricky.

  2. Other people recommend to just get a 40 gallon right away and make sure it has lots of cover and hides because the stress of sizing up enclosures as they grow is worse in the long run.

I'm not super concerned about the cost, as it's manageable for me either way. I just want whatever is best for the snake, and easiest for me to set up and maintain. What are your suggestions?

Sexing help

Hi! I'm a first time hognose owner. I'm looking to get a few opinions because I'm quite on the fence about my baby. I bought her when she was about a month old, but the breeder didnt even know the sex. I've been calling her by female terms, but I'm not totally sure. A lot of people have told me she's a female, or a long tailed female, or a male. In some pictures she presents more female looking and in others more male leaning. I counted around 37 scales after her cloaca so I'm not totally sure. If anyone could share what they think, that'd be great!

Something is wrong…

So my hognose is almost 2 years old now, but this is what he looks like. He is literally whithering away. I thought it was because he didn’t eat for like the first 6 months I had him, but even with him eating more consistently now, he is still not gaining any weight. And even though he is not losing any weight, he is just so skinny. And he just regurgitated a meal and I am scared that a regurgitation in this state might kill him. Planning to call a vet after the weekend is over. The bulge is from the pinky he had just eaten which he ended up regurgitating. I had someone tell me he could’ve been from a bad egg that should’ve been culled, like a runt/failure to thrive, could that be it?

Help! Need Advice!!

Meet Ominis the VEGAN hognose. He hates food. Absolutely hates it. He is a year old, I have only had him for 5 months and he has gone on 4 hunger strikes for several weeks at a time. I have tried repti-links (frog and pheasant flavored) pinkies of various sizes, i have tried heating them up, keeping them cold, cheaking his humidity and temp, also tried scented oils and different types of fish. I have tried with tongs, without, different colored tongs. He hates EVERYTHING. I am open to ANY possible advice to help feed this picky eater. 😭

It was inevitable…

I have so enjoyed, Rolo, that it is time for number 2.

Putting together the ReptiZoo, 20 gallon, encourages me to promote the ease of assembly and quality of the enclosures. Front opening, heavy mesh lid, and vent for wiring. The stacker is great for space saving.

Going with the ReptiEarth, MicroChip and sphagnum moss mixture, as I did for Rolo.

The baby won’t arrive until early September, so I have plenty of time for hides, water bowls and plants.
