Holiday Season is Difficult

I don't know if anyone can relate to this or has any thoughts/words of encouragement, but here goes.

I have been estranged from my parents for three years. Long story short, I grew up in a dysfunctional family with an abusive father and a mother who has stood by his side unconditionally. The relatives I do keep in touch with live far away and are not spiritually healthy people. There's a lot more I can say, but I think that's sufficient background for my question.

Something I have begun to dread is Thanksgiving season and Nativity season, when well meaning people at church ask me what my plans are for the holidays, if I am going to see family, where my family live, what they do, etc., etc. etc. I don't mind telling the truth as I have nothing to hide, but I think most people would be uncomfortable with that (and I don't like discussing it anyway) so I usually end up saying something vague and trying to change the topic. I don't believe in telling white lies, even though I understand why it's easier and why people do it. Last year was especially bad and I almost had fully blown panic attacks a few times. I try to tell myself that people are just trying to make conversation and mean well, but it doesn't seem to help.

I am very grateful for my church and have joined families from my church for Thanksgiving and Nativity on occasion, but that can be even more painful to me to see loving, happy families.

My priest and therapist haven't really had much helpful to say, except that maybe it will get easier over time as God heals my wounds. I imagine that's probably true, but I'd appreciate anything else that could be helpful in the meantime.

Thanks and God Bless!

Monasticism

Hi! I have been Orthodox for a little over two years and have a growing interest in becoming an Orthodox nun. I'm interested in hearing from others who are considering a monastic life as well, and/or may be further along in the process than I am. What are some of the factors you are considering in your discernment of whether you are called to celibacy? Thanks so much!
