Leaving after ten years…

Has anyone ever been with a family long term and found it more emotional than you thought when the job was over?
How does the separation effect the children? I mean I was a their caregiver and constant big buddy for a very long time. I was a consistent adult who showed up, knew them, cared about them, played with them, helped them, comforted them, and was woven into their normal life. Then poof I’m gone. Was They are boys and now are ages 11,9&6. When I started it was just one 18 month old. I have gone to visit them a few times, but that just makes me miss them more. I guess I’m just wondering how that separation effect young children.
