It has a black border that isn't very visible in images but it also made me wonder if the entire flag should just be the inner part.

This ones a bit dark theme wise. The red symbolizes blood, the crescent symbolizes Islam and the colour green being replaced with black and a ship is actually supposed to symbolize our loss of nature and the country's hypothetical demise due to climate change.

Maybe the red should be a bit darker.

I designed an alternate flag for the Maldives. Yeah.

The image has built in NVIDIA ray tracing but the actual important difference between the current flag and this one is the flipped crescent, big difference I know. I think I've heard of nations protesting by changing small aspects of their flag, same line of thought here since most of us hate the government.
