URochester iGEM Synthetic Biology Summer Program Opportunity for potential REMS students

I'm currently a member of our Rochester iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machines) team (and in the BS/MD program!) and believe that this would be a good opportunity for both learning science and a connection to URochester that you could write about on a potential future application. Having connections to a school that you can discuss in a "Why School" essay helps to show interest!

The International Genetically Engineered Machines (iGEM) Competition is an annual global competition where student-led teams collaborate to design innovative solutions to real-world problems using synthetic biology. Synthetic biology is a scientific discipline that approaches biology with an engineering perspective. By using DNA as building blocks, scientists construct new organisms or create new biological pathways in pre-existing organisms.

This year, our team has developed a free, self-paced online synthetic biology program designed for students ages 14–18 who are interested in biology, engineering, medicine, or scientific research. Throughout the program, participants will explore the fundamentals of synthetic biology while developing their own original research project. The course includes interactive learning modules, worksheets, peer review activities, and a final research presentation, giving students an opportunity to experience the research design process used by real scientists and iGEM teams. I have attached our participant link, which includes additional information about the program, eligibility, and how to register.

Registration link (Final deadline 08/21): https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdteBD2MvGwwhVKOabpAzXY7ivTsXd6eZhzjlPgelx4oRya-w/viewform?usp=publish-editor

Awards will be given based on the final presentation, as well as gift packages!
