PC randomly shutting down when CPU usage gets high on game start up
TUF B650 Plus Wifi motherboard
Lian Li SP850 PSU
Ryzen 5 7600X3D
My build is well over a year old (built Jan 2025) and I had never had any issues until now.
So far this has happened five times; 3 times my PC had completely shut down when the shaders are downloading for Marvel Rivals when I am on the lobby screen for the game; 1 time it just shut down at the beginning of a rivals match (I had been playing for well over 2 hours already with no issues); 1 final time it happened when I tested it with Fortnite, I don’t play often and it was on the initialization stage/shaders on the launcher and it shut off. When I tested it with Fortnite the CPU usage hit 100% and then turned off. For the times I know rivals will download shaders I watched the CPU temps and they don’t go above 84C, but usage is really high as well. GPU drivers are updated and the temps are great.
Clearly some sort of protective measure is being triggered to cause a complete shut down, but i’m not sure which especially because this problem started out of nowhere.
- Failing PSU, I have no way to test this, Id have to buy a test one which would be super annoying because the cables for the one I have fit really tight…
- CPU overheating (never got into the 90’s but not great temps, this is unlikely though)
- BIOS is not updated at all, on version 3042 from 2024
Personally, I think it might be because the BIOS is out of date and is triggering some werid things with power delivery. I was already scared to update the BIOS to being with (hence why it’s so old i just keep putting it off) but now I am even more worried to update it because of the random shut downs. I’ll also have to check if the chipset is updated +drivers; I have not kept them up to date which is a stupid mistake that I should’ve done something about sooner. Only the GPU had updated drivers and windows has been updated…
Also l noticed looking at my 24pin it looks like this… I tried pushing it in more but the clip is down and it won’t move. Could that tiny gap next the to +4 caused this issue? It has been like this since I built my PC I guess but again never had any problems. I hated the cables with this PSU they were extremely hard to push into the connectors.

Any help is appreciate, thanks!
