I built a smart bike tracker that hides inside your handlebar for ~$40

Hey everyone!!

I wanted to share some stuff about my project VVVEBA COMPACT! It's a super small bike tracker, with a whole bunch of smart features. It can find its own location, detect theft via accelerometer, and notify the bike owner near-instantly.

Current features TLDR:

  • 18mm x 100mm, hidden inside handlebars
  • Instant movement detection
  • Auto-arming and disarming
  • Anti-tamper light sensor
  • Charging via USB-C
  • Easy installation

Coming soon TLDR:

  • 2G -> 4G
  • GPS
  • Prepaid SIM, 10 years, no subscription
  • Improved power saving

It's an 18mm x 100mm footprint, with no case, because it's hidden entirely inside your bike handlebars! This way, thieves aren't aware of the system, and won't take it out! And in case they try to, there's a sensor that will trigger the alarm if light is detected.

The system features auto-arming and disarming (currently via BLE, but in the next version that will be eradicated), just walk up to your bike to disarm the system, and walk away to arm.

Installation is easy and non-destructive, just slide the PCB in, keep the antennas outside the metal, then slide the rubber grip on.

In the future, I'll make it even smaller, and make it use 4G instead of 2G, add GPS, improve power saving, and add a prepaid built-in SIM that lasts for 10 years with no subscription. All while actually using less parts, and keeping the price low ($40 for all features or $25 without the built-in SIM).

It's part of the Polish Explory competition right now - if you want to support it a vote at vvveba.com would mean a lot. No account needed, just a name and email.

Thanks everyone <333

I think I might have actually done something about bike theft.

Hi everyone! I wanted to share something I've been working on for the past year or so, related to bike theft.

I ride my bike a lot, and bike theft anxiety is genuinely one of the most annoying parts of cycling for me. A few months back I rode to the barbershop, locked up to a light pole right outside, and still caught myself turning my neck 360 degrees to check on it every 30 seconds.

Honestly it got to the point where I just... didn't want to ride as much. Which sucks, because cycling is one of my favorite things.

So I started building something. I'm calling it VVVEBA COMPACT - basically a bike alarm that you never have to think about.

The design is an 18mm x 100mm PCB that slides directly into your handlebar, and antennas are placed under the grip.

I'm really excited about a feature I named "Lost Bike Alerts" - if your bike gets stolen, nearby users with the app get notified instantly, which could actually help catch theft early. I also tried hard to keep the costs down; the target price is around $40 for the full 4G + GPS version with a 10-year prepaid SIM and no subscription fees.

It's still a work in progress, but it's one of 150 projects in Poland's Explory national competition right now. The prize money would genuinely help me move from prototype to something manufacturable.

If you're curious, the project has a website at vvveba.com with more details. There's also a button to go to the voting page; I'd be super happy if you voted, I'm trying my best to get into the finals!

And yeah, I'd love to hear your thoughts on my project, what I could improve, and if you'd be interested in having such a bike alarm for yourself!
