Mission 1 Pro Timelapse / Nightlapse

My wife and I headed up to the high elevations yesterday in hopes of catching a sunset. I set my M1 Pro up for a timelapse and things were looking promising for a while. A big clap of thunder overhead and storms moving in put an abrupt end to shooting from there. After we got home, I changed some settings and set the camera up on the roof in hopes of catching some leftover meteors. The results are at the end of the video. Camera settings are in the description of the video on YT.

Swallowtails and a Hummingbird on Natives

I caught some Eastern Tiger Swallowtails on mountain mint, cardinal flower, and blue lobelia in our yard recently. The hummingbird at the end wasn't really very interested in the lobelia, it just didn't want the butterfly to have it.

Mission 1 Pro at a waterfall

My wife and I hit a couple of local waterfalls yesterday. Getting to them is mostly on trail, with a bit of creek walking. This is the first one we visited. Even with partly sunny conditions, light was low, so I kept camera movements to a minimum and used a mini tripod for a lot of clips. Everything was shot in 4K 30 except the one slomo clip that's 4K 240.

I tried Gyroflow with my Mission1 Pro for the 1st time today

My wife and I generally hike in the mornings and sometimes the light in the forests is really low which affects the stabilization. Having the shutter speed set to the 1/120 - 1/7680 range and ISO at 25-1600 helps, but I thought I'd try Gyroflow today. I've never used it, but got the plug-in loaded to the free version of Davinci. I shot some clips today in 4K 16:9 Wide with no stabilization, then when I got back home saw that 8K 4:3 may have been a better choice. Then I found out I needed a lens profile for the M1Pro, but couldn't find one, but saw a thread where a guy said the Hero 11 one worked pretty good. I found one of those that was for 4K 16:9 and I think it did OK. The first 20 seconds of this clip is without Gyroflow, the last 20 seconds is the same clip with it in default settings. I still have some more experimenting to do and would appreciate any tips you might have, or a link to the correct lens profile. Hummingbird Clearwing on Buttonbush

Our buttonbushes are still blooming and still attracting pollinators. They are mostly bumble bees, but I managed to grab some video of this clearwing.

Mission 1 Pro 4K 240fps Butterfly with close up lens

I'm still waiting to see if GoPro releases a quality macro lens for the M1Pro. In the mean time, I've been experimenting with close up lenses I already had. This video was with a 67mm B+W +3 on a 58mm filter adapter I got on Etsy. I cropped in 1.5x in post to get rid of some of the edge distortion. The version on YT is 4K - more settings are in the video description.

the butterflies are finally here

It seems like the butterflies were late to our yard this year, but we now have quite a few floating around. Here's an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail on a buttonbush bloom along with some of it's bee friends. Still haven't seen any monarchs - which doesn't mean they haven't been here.

Mission 1 Pro barely under water

I took my M1 Pro to another river here in the mountains of western North Carolina yesterday. The streams in this area are clear and I like seeing what patterns the flowing water makes just below the surface of the water. A longer 4K version can be seen here - https://youtu.be/QeU36VoJPIM?si=pLrILxoQ6gv-OKjN

Hummingbird 240 fps - Mission 1 Pro

I wanted to be able to use a polarizing filter on my M1 Pro when shooting around waterfalls and streams, so I bought the 3D printed 58mm filter adapter. I already had a spare 62mm polarizer and ND filter, so I'm using a 58-62mm step up ring for those. It looks like it would be easy to cross thread the threaded part of the plastic adapter so I'll just leave the step up ring in it at all times and just unscrew the filters from the ring. I also already had a 58mm Canon 250D close up lens, so I used a 62-58mm step down ring to attach it to the other ring and tested it around home today. I'm getting good focus from about 12 to 8 inches from the subject, but there's distortion around the edges. For the hummingbird video, I zoomed 1.5x in post. Shot in 4K 240. I'm still hoping for a macro mod from GoPro.

Mission 1 Pro photos

I've rarely used any of the action cams I have had to take photos, but I took some with the M1 Pro today at a fire tower along the Blue Ridge Parkway just to see how they would turn out. Shot in RAW, processed, cropped, then resized for online posting. The first image is looking towards the sun, and the sun is at my back for the other 2.

Wild Turkeys in the Yard

There are quite a few wild turkeys that roam around our neighborhood. This family has been stopping by our yard at least a couple of times a day. The adult female is in the first photo and 3 of the 5 juveniles are in the second one. The yellow shrub on the left is Bushy St John's Wort (Hypericum densiflorum). It's been a bee magnet in our yard. Also pictured are purple coneflowers, hoary skullcap behind those. The yellow flower on the right is threadleaf coreopsis. The violets scattered about are trying to take over, but they are a welcome sight when they bloom in early spring.

Pruning Buttonbush to look like small trees.

I have several Buttonbushes (Cephalanthus occidentalis) planted in the yard, and decided a few years ago to keep these 2 trimmed to look like small trees. I really like the look and they serve as a nice entrance way to the back yard. All of ones in our yard are planted in clay soil - not in a wet area like you often read about. The bees have been all over the blooms this year so far, but the butterflies are late to the game. The first photo is from today and the butterfly photos are from previous years.

GoPro Misson 1 Pro Nightlapse - first attempt

I tried a nightlapse with the M1 Pro for the first time last night and this is what I got. We live in a Bortle Class 5 area, so not ideal for night photography. I set the camera up on my roof in hopes of catching some of the neighborhood fireworks and had the camera hooked up to a power bank. Shot in 8K30 4:3, rendered in 4K 16:9. Other settings - video - no photos, interval 20 seconds, auto shutter, auto white balance, sharpness low, denoise medium, wide lens, 10 bit, bit rate Max, ISO 25-1600, EV 0.0. I did a little tweaking in DaVinci.

Nature's Fireworks in my Garden

I was out in my yard in western North Carolina this morning seeing what bugs I could capture before the heat sets in for the day. There were lots of bees, but no butterflies. These plants reminded me of fireworks (kind of) on this 4th of July - Scarlet Bee Balm, Button Bush, and Cedarglade St John's Wort (Hypericum frondosum).

Beneath the Surface - GoPro Mission 1 Pro

I took my M1 Pro up to one of western North Carolina's clear mountain streams a couple of days ago to see what underwater footage I could get around some of the cascades. This is a couple of minutes of what I got. Shot in 4K120 for the most part with a little 4K240 - GP-Log2.

Mission 1 Pro behind a waterfall - 4K30, 120, and 240fps

I headed to a local waterfall last week to play around with some settings on the camera. It's one of the waterfalls featured in the movie Last of the Mohicans. This is a short clip of what I got around the upper section of the falls. I could have definitely used an ND filter for the 30fps to bring the shutter speed down, but I like the way the 120 and 240 turned out. In some cases I preferred the 120 to the 240. The YouTube compression didn't do the 30fps any favors. The original clips have a lot of detail. The audio is from the M1 Pro, but it's all from the 30fps clips. I still have a lot to learn working with log footage.

Using the Mission 1 Pro to capture backyard birds - zooming in software

I've had my M1 Pro for a little over a week now and will mainly be using it while hiking and traveling. I'm also experimenting with using it to capture backyard birds. This was shot in 8K 60 linear and I used the free version of Davinci Resolve to zoom. In the first part of the video, I zoomed slowly from 1X to 3X and thought the detail held up fairly well for my purposes. Other camera settings are in the video description.
