Knowledge Availability of Captain America, specifically the museum exhibit

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember if it's ever specified when exactly the Captain America WW2 exhibit was created/opened to the public.

That being said, prior to Steve being found in the ice and his later involvement in the battle of New York and the formation of the Avengers, how much knowledge do we believe was openly available to the public (through documentaries, books, news, movies, etc.) about him and his action during WW2, as well as his life beforehand? Do you think they taught about him and the commandos in schools? Could a civilian go to the library and research his life and family tree and the like? Could people easily learn what happened to him before and during the war (the serum, and his sacrifice leading to his "death")? Was it readily available knowledge of his connection to Bucky, or Peggy, or Howard?

What do we know/think?
