An endangered baby Lar Gibbon, native to Southeast Asia, was recently trafficked into India through a porous border corridor in Manipur. A localized wildlife seller based in Erode, Tamil Nadu, acquired the primate and subsequently transferred it to Chennai in June. The animal was kept at the Injambakkam farmhouse of prominent CavinKare industrialist CK Ranganathan, whose son Manu Ranjith is married to actor Chiyaan Vikram's daughter, Akshita. The issue blew up when Vikram posted an Instagram reel cuddling the primate, triggering immense backlash from animal activists because the highly protected species lacks the mandatory approved legal clearances from the Chief Wildlife Warden. While Vikram quickly deleted the video, the Tamil Nadu Forest Department and wildlife authorities have launched a formal investigation into the illegal supply chain and transit paperwork
