Anyone else think that Breaking Benjamin has some of the best bass guitar playing ever?
Seriously, the bass on most BB songs just sounds so cool and creepy and ominous. It's awesome.
Hey, I made a Breaking Benjamin-style instrumental demo on BandLab. It's influenced by Dark Before Dawn and Ember. I'd love to hear what you all think of it
bandlab.comDoes anyone else love the djent elements in Ember? Feed the Wolf, Psycho, Close Your Eyes, etc. all sound so badass with their djent-inspired guitars
reddit.comAllele was a nu metal/alternative metal band active from the mid-2000s to the early 2010s. Their sound is basically the perfect midpoint of Breaking Benjamin's cinematic and anthemic qualities, Cold's dark moodiness, Adema's youthful angst, and Nonpoint's groove and swagger.
Their sound is overall very similar in vibe to Phobia and Dear Agony, with guitars that are heavy but melodic, super-tight drumming, and brooding, melancholic vocals from lead singer Wally Wood (quite the interesting name IMO).
Just a bit of background:
Starset is a cinematic rock band with a sci-fi theme. Their sound is basically a combination of the baritone guitar riffs of Breaking Benjamin, symphonic/orchestral elements reminiscent of Hans Zimmer film scores, Celldweller-style synths, and the progressive soundscapes of Thirty Seconds to Mars.
And their lead singer, Dustin Bates, has a pretty interesting story, because he has a PhD in electrical engineering, has done research for the US Air Force, and even taught at the International Space University in France.
Here is their best song (in my opinion):
If they did, I feel like it would probably be either A Thousand Suns or One More Light, but for completely different reasons.
While ATS seems cool in theory (an electronics-heavy, experimental prog rock concept album about a nuclear apocalypse), the execution arguably falls flat because the story concept often feels half-baked and the excessive amount of instrumental interludes disrupts the momentum of the songs, making the pacing seem really weird.
On the other, One More Light arguably plays it too safe. In this album, Linkin Park pretty much completely abandons their rock and metal influences and goes full-pop, sounding more like Imagine Dragons and Halsey than anything else.
To be completely honest, I enjoy both of these albums a lot, and Linkin Park is my all-time favorite band, but ATS and OML undeniably have major flaws that could easily constitute Trainwreckord material.
I know that nu metal isn't as complex or technical as other genres of rock and metal, but that doesn't mean that wasn't experimental or innovative in its own way.
Nu metal bands do a lot of really interesting things with their guitars and drumming that have never really been done in any other genre. I mean, Invitation to the Dance by 40 Below Summer is all over the place sonically, from chugging riffs to atmospheric chords to chaotic drumming to odd-time signatures and vocals that range from soulful falsetto to demonic screams to aggressive rapping, how could anyone say that's not creative?
Sorry for the rant, I just had to get all that off my chest.
For those of you who don't know, Earshot was a short-lived nu metal/alternative metal band from the early 2000s, mostly known for having a lead singer who sounds nearly identical to Maynard James Keenan. Not only that, but they also completely ripped off the Tool guitar tone and drumming style, while simplifying it just enough to appeal to the mainstream rock crowd.
Earshot isn't just one of those bands like Chevelle that kind of sounds like Tool; Earshot sounded so similar that a lot of people were tricked into thinking they were actually listening to Tool.
The thing is, Earshot isn't even a bad band; they actually have some bangers, like Get Away and Wait. They're just so unoriginal that it's mind-boggling.
Anyway, can you guys think of any other situations like this? I'm genuinely curious.
By the way, here are some Earshot songs if you're curious enough to check them out:

Personally, I think he would have looked way scarier and cooler if he looked more lizard-like, with a longer snout, sharper teeth and claws, limbs that are long and lean as opposed to bulky, etc. I'm also not a big fan of the dark green skin color, I would have preferred if his skin had been a bit more of a lighter/grayish green.
