Does playing the song the whole way through matter?

Hello, I have been playing bass for nearly 3 years. I can play a few songs and by that I mean: I played the whole song all the way through note for note.

I only say I have learnt a song if I have played it that way.

However this battle for perfection is often pretty tiring.

Is this the best way to learn bass? Is it better for learning if I learn more songs and don't play them perfectly note for note? or is it better to strive to play the entire song perfectly? if you get what I mean.

Whats the best way too approach learning songs because when I jam no one cares about if I played everything perfectly.
