The weakest Excadrill and Blisseys you need to beat dynamax registeel all the time in a Quad and their bulkpoints.

TL:DR

Level your blissey to level 27.

Level your excadrill to level 25.5.

4 teams of Blissey(pound), Blissey(pound), Excadrill(mud shot, level 1 max attack) can beat registeel in a quad with a bit of luck without any boost. And it is also a solid team to bring to a lobby with strangers.

Strategy:

  1. Relobby if one of registeel's attack is focus blast
  2. Spam pound/mud shot between max phases.
  3. Only use max quake with excadrill during max phase

Note: And to guarantee the win in the worst luck possible the party will need to power up the excadrills to level 29.5 and level 2 max attack.

Introduction

Excadrill and Blissey are often praised by the community due to their accessibility and strength in max battle and they are definitely excellent investments for max battle. In this analysis we will look into their performance against the dynamax registeel to see how far 2 blissey and excadrill can go with minimal investment.

This analysis is mainly written to help people with a small community with limited resources to beat registeel with the simplest strategy possible, and also provide bulkpoint information to help everyone to get more ready for registeel.

Resources/tools used

Huge thanks to

TrueNourishment's analysis provides the basis.

CreatorBeastGD's PokéChespin max battle simulator for specific damage calculation for the bulkpoints and damage.

Note: The calculation assumes registeel has 18000hp and CPM of 0.9.

I (sort of) double checked those numbers myself by rewatching a Registeel duo I did. From my calculation registeel should have 18000hp or even less. And the calculation from 0.9CPM seems to match the actual damage.

Assumptions

  1. Registeel does not have focus blast in its moveset, players relobby when seeing focus blast. (hyper beam is included in the calculation to make the team more versatile)
  2. Registeel gets to use one attack before each max phase.
  3. The team only attacks with blissey between max phases. (simplest strategy without coordination), dps improvement from excadrill are omitted to keep things simple and lower bound.
  4. All fast attack deals 1 damage (blissey's pound damage) (Note: A level 15.5 or higher excadrill deals 3 damage per hit)
  5. Each Blissey has a iv of x/10/10 and Excadrill has a iv of 10/10/10.
  6. Players dodge every targeted attack and for simplicity dodged attack will count as the same damage as a large attack (note that it is not the actual case (but close enough) due to the rounding issue and / dodge system). But since we are considering the worst scenario, registeel only uses 1 large attack between max phase (as it deals the most damage to the party) in the analysis.
  7. All forms of damage boosts (friend/gloves/weather/blade/adventure effect/mushroom) are ignored and to get the lower bound of how strong the mons need to be.

Methodology

With the simple strategy of only max attack during max phase, we can calculate the amount of max phase (= number of attack registeel used except the fatal blow = amount of attack we need to tank) needed to beat registeel.

Number of attacks to tank = (Registeel's HP) / ((Excadrill Max attack damage)*12 + (damage between max phases))

Where: Registeel's HP = 18000 & Damage between max phase = 100

First we will look into the most cost efficient way to power up the party to tank by looking at the bulkpoints. And with that we will look how much further power up it takes to win.

Part 1: Bulkpoint of excadrill and blissey

We will calculate the bulkpoint of flash cannon, zap cannon and hyper beam in this section to find the most budget level for the worst iv Excadrill (x/10/10) and Blissey(x/10/10) to tank the most amount of registeel's attack. (Note: The tank number for excadrill does not count the fatal blow.)

^(Flash cannon:)

Blissey (x/10/10) at level 21.5 to tank 3 instead of 2

Blissey (x/10/10) at level 34 to tank 4 instead of 3.

Excadrill (x/10/10) at level 39 to tank 2 instead of 1.

^(Zap cannon:)

Blissey (x/10/10) at level 25 to tank 3 instead of 2

Excadrill (x/10/10) at level 25 to tank 2 instead of 1

Excadrill (x/10/10) at level 46.5 to tank 3 instead of 2

^(Hyper beam:)

Excadrill (x/10/10) at level 21.5 to tank 1 instead of 0

Blissey (x/10/10) at level 27 to tank 3 instead of 2

Hence, the most cost efficient way to increase the party longevity is level 27 blissey and level 25 excadrill.

We will consider each blissey can tank 3 attacks and excadrill can tank 1 attack for the upcoming calculation, with that "Number of attacks to tank" = 3+3+1 = 7

Part 2: What it takes to defeat registeel in 7 max phases with the worst luck possible?

By applying the formula

Number of attacks to tank = (Registeel's HP) / ((Excadrill Max attack damage)*12 + (damage between max phases))

7 = 18000/(12x+100)

x = 206 (rounded up)

And for an Excadrill (10/x/x) to deal 206 max attack damage it will need to be level 29.5 with level 2 max quake.

Part 3: No, you don't need that much firepower at practice.

In the calculation above the odds are heavily against us with the worse case possible, so in practise it should be easier since:

If registeel goes for target attack, the party takes 1/4 damage of a large attack if you dodge successfully, in practice you are super likely to get more than 7 max phases to attack

When you get 8 max phases:

8 = 18000/(12x+100)

x = 180 (rounded up)

When you get 9 max phases:

9 = 18000/(12x+100)

x = 159 (rounded up)

And a level 25 level 1 max attack excadrill deals 158 damage, you just need 0.5 more level to get to that 159 damage. (you don't actually need that since the extra damage from attacking using excadrill at the end and damage before the fatal blow makes up the difference)

Summary: check dl:tr at the top

Extra section: It doesn't have to be blissey or excadrill.

If you actually took time and read the whole thing, I hope you can learn something from this analysis and be able to make better decision when planning future t5 dynamax battles.

Originally I planned to write a more generic analysis and realise it is too much content midway so I ended up focusing on blissey and excadrill because personally I think they are the best budget dynamax pokemon you can invest, also blissey is the most versatile tank for registeel being able to tank 3 of the attack 3 times.

To keep things short in general you can plan your party with these in mind:

Tanks: Be versatile for public lobby, if it is too expensive it is always great to go for 2x blissey. If your party is fully coordinated then you can consider building a party around tanking 1 specific moveset. (e.g. level 42 gengar as tanks vs focus blast/hyper beam registeel can do the same feat as the blissey i discuss above). You can refer to Resources/tools used section and use them to do calculations yourself.

Attacker: Higher the max attack damage the better, the ability to tank 1 extra attack might come in clutch.

Final words

This is my first long analysis article I post on Silphroad and I hope it will help people looking for ways to beat dynamax registeel with limited resources, I might do some similar analysis in the future if it is received well.

Hope i did not make any mistake here and please point out if you found any.

Finally feel free to ask any question regarding the articles and help on teambuilding/preping in general, I am happy to help if I have the time.

Thunder shock generating 9 energy every 2 turn and Mirror shot having a cost of 35 energy allow us to use finish using mirror shot in just 14 second (time needed for using thunder shock 4 times and mirror shot) after starting a trainer/team leader training battle.

Note: Since Double Iron Bash is also a 35 energy move, Thunder Shock/Double Iron Bash(*legacy move) melmetal can also achieve the same feat if you have one.

Edit: Thanks to u/glumada's reminder Lock-On/Thunde Shock Smeargle is the actual fastest pokemon beating this combination by 1 turn (With Lock-On it only takes 35/5 = 7 turns to charge mirror shot instead of 8) making it 0.5 second faster than the the combination i mentioned.
