Over the last week or two I’ve noticed some white appearing on my betta’s top fin. Sorta hard to capture (he gets camera shy when I try and grab a front shot), but it isn’t fuzzy, and sits flat on his skin.
Behavior is normal. Eating fine. Water params with liquid kit are Ammonia 0, Nitrites 0, Nitrates hovering between 15-20. Did a 20% water change today and removed some of the frogbit to give him more room to swim.
Normal? Something to worry about?
I have a small stash at home but am planning a new project and am totally paralyzed about the thought of buying new fabric.
There are a couple of fabric stores that aren’t terribly far away, and then there’s a Michael’s and a Hobby Lobby… the only place I’ve bought fabric in person was hobby lobby bc there was actually someone there available to cut the fabric I wanted. Michael’s never has anyone working in the fabric section and their selection sucks. And I’m a little nervous about going to an actual fabric store. Idk why…. Maybe just fear of the unknown…? Not totally sure, but having a hard time motivating myself to check one out (even though I’m sure it would be a wonderland of options… sigh).
I’m also completely at a loss shopping on Etsy where I’ve ordered fabrics before because it’s SO hard to tell what the actual colors look like from the images online, which has backfired in the past.
So… where do you buy fabric from? Should I just suck it up and get brave and go to the actual fabric store?? Buy a swatch so I can choose from home and then order correctly? 🫠
Please help a sister out. Any tips/suggestions would be appreciated.
I made this one for myself and am soooo excited to have finished it. I had initially planned on a creamy white background but came here for color advice and someone said that they made this at a retreat (I think) and that someone used dark fabric for the background. Whoever you were, thank you, because that comment stuck with me and I pivoted and am so happy with the final result. Included a few process pics too. Just so glad to be done!!!
Pattern is Five Star Experience by Michelle Cain. Fabrics are Moda Birds of Paradise and Peacock jelly rolls, northcott navy, and backing came from hobby lobby (don’t come for me).
This finished right around 73.5x73.5… it was my biggest project yet, and was horrible to quilt. 😂 But I did it!!!! I had intended for this to be my summer quilt bc I’ve been so hot at night… I can’t wait to wash it and throw it on my bed.
I posted this morning looking for a kick in the butt to get started on a Father’s Day apron I promised myself I’d make for my husband. And I actually did it! I assembled the pattern, cut the fabric, sewed that B right up, and she is all done!!!
Don’t look too close… it’s def not perfect, but I hope he loves it.
It took me a good portion of the day bc I kept getting interrupted, but I’m SO relieved. Now I have a couple days to figure out a way to have my kids add a little decoration or note to it for a little extra personal touch.
Thank you to those who offered their kind words and encouragement!!! Paralysis tried to get me, but not today, ADHD…
I’ve been planning on completing the quilt in image 2, using the strips in image 1 from the Kona birds of paradise and Kona peacock jelly rolls (with a couple extra solids as well)… the background fabric is the creamy off-white at top right.
Well, I’ve been fiddling with the actual fabrics I’ve pulled from the two rolls, and the more I sit on it, the less happy I am with my color choices. I thought maybe I needed a different pattern and found the one in image 3, which I think is a beautiful quilt.
But I’m still just hung up on my color choices and completely unsure if I’m heading in the right direction. I realize that tonally speaking there isn’t a TON of variety in my choices, and I’m not sure if that’s what is throwing me off (have already put a b/w filter on to see variety etc). I just don’t want to get neck deep into cutting and pressing and then realize that I should have trusted my hesitation and that I hate it.
Do you have any color feedback for me?? Do I just need to trust the process? I just feel lost (and very stuck), and would love some feedback or advice. 😩
Got so much support and wonderful suggestions along the way from this community, I had to share a couple shots of the finished piece!!!
The expecting parents said that their nursery theme is “green and ocean”… so I hope this fits the bill. I agonized at every step of the process, but I’m super pleased with the result and SO glad to be finished with this baddie. Still have to pop it in the wash before I send it off, but otherwise she is done and done.
The sea creature panel is Dear Stella beyond the sea. Solid squares, cornerstones and binding are Riley Blake. Moda sashing. And, (don’t come for me, but…) I got the flannel backing at hobby lobby— shockingly, it ended up being really nice quality w/ very minimal shrinkage and so far no pilling after the initial washing. ❤️
THANK YOU SO MUCH to everyone who offered their quilting ideas and encouragement on my post yesterday! I ended up following the “wave” suggestion and am SO happy with how it turned out. This was my first time straying from straight lines—of course it isn’t perfect, but I absolutely love it! I’m going to make a scrappy binding from the solid block colors and bind this bad boy right up. Love this sub so much!!!! ❤️
I just posted my finished top the other day, and I had planned to do a crosshatch for the quilting… but now that it’s sandwiched up, I’m not sure if that’s what I should do, and I’ve basically reached paralysis.
The stupid batting I used has a 3.5” max stitch distance or I would just stitch in the ditch and call it a day (the blocks are about 7.5”). I feel like the lack of symmetry between the size of my blocks and the requirements of the batting have totally thrown me for a loop.
I have only ever machine quilted 2 quilts, and am pretty much completely intimidated by anything that isn’t just a straight line. So I need some guidance. 🫠 What should I do???
I’m using flannel for the back of a quilt for the first time. I washed it, and am definitely going to press it, but should I also starch? I’m planning to both spray and pin baste (not sure if that matters). I need to chop about 18” off the length before I can make my sandwich, and usually I starch before I cut, but idk if it will do anything weird to the flannel?
Any flannel tips are appreciated!!
