Is there a way to cut behind a wood face so the removed piece can be re-used?

I'd like to cut a 1.5" deep, 5x5" piece out of the front of a 16x16 chunk of Manitoba maple. My goal is to remove this piece, hollow out behind to make an inside recess for a shelf, then reattach the removed piece with hinges to act a door.

Is there any way to cleanly cut out a piece like this? Thanks!
