California is one step closer to recognizing Jews as an ethnicity

The first of its kind in the US, this bill would allow Jews to voluntarily identify as Jewish on state forms. It now awaits a final vote by August 31, at which point Governor Newsom will have another month to approve it. The article explains how its proponents say "SB 1387 would help the state better track antisemitism, target public health outreach and understand the size of California’s Jewish population", while the publication also linked concerns regarding individual privacy and erasure of identity for those who descend from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds (such as in Latin America). However, California government demographic data standards require state agencies to allow individuals to select multiple ethnic and racial designations. Currently, Jewishness is only classified in California law as a religious affiliation.

Edit: erase to erasure
