We just purchased a late 70s home and will be doing a medium-level remodel— keeping the floors and layout, but replacing the cabinets (in poor condition) and adding a wall of pantry cabinets (currently no pantry storage). The cabinets will knock out a good chunk of our budget, so we are trying to decide between these two upgrades:
A new fridge. The current fridge was likely purchased in the early 2000s. It is the typical older white fridge, but it does have an exterior water dispenser. It doesn’t stink and is in okay condition, just some scratches on the interior. Function is fine, just not pretty and no bells and whistles. The new fridges we are looking at are mostly $1.9K to $2.3K.
Granite countertops instead of linoleum. Kitchen currently has 80s linoleum anyways that we will be replacing. For the difference of $2.5Kwe can have granite (honed black mist) installed professionally instead of DIYing a linoleum countertop ($1K).
I suppose the third option would be for us to do both and try to find a 0% APR card/payment plan to finance one or the other, or wait for a Black Friday/Labor Day sale/good FB marketplace or Open Box special on fridges?
Thoughts? Not overly concerned about resale but we have been pushed into an unexpected move once before, so it is at least a partial consideration.
