Dishonest Mechanics in Harare

I need to vent because the sheer dishonesty of some mechanics in this city is absolute madness.

My car (Mercedes W203 with an M271 engine) needs a new oil cooler. Now, if you know anything about these engines, you know the oil cooler is a high-stakes part… if you buy a cheap generic brand and it fails internally, it mixes your engine oil and coolant into a chocolate milkshake type texture and completely destroys your engine bearings.

Knowing this, my actual trusted mechanic explicitly told me to only buy premium, reputable German OEM brands like Behr or Febi Bilstein. Since he didn’t have them in stock, I started calling around other garages.
I found this one guy who claimed he had exactly what I needed. Because I know how these guys operate, I literally called him SIX TIMES just to confirm the exact brand he had in his shop. Six separate times. Every single time, he looked me in the virtual eye and assured me, "Yes, I have the Febi unit right here."

Because I didn't want to risk driving the car and damaging the engine further, I paid for an InDrive to go to his garage. It was almost a 20km trip.

I get there, and surprise, surprise… the part isn’t even on the table. He makes me sit there and wait for almost 30 minutes while he sends a runner to go “pick it up from the other garage.”

When the runner finally scrambles back, I instantly see a receipt and some change in his hand. He had clearly just sprinted down to a shop to buy whatever was cheapest on the shelf.

The guy hands over the box, and it’s Autotech… a budget, third-tier white-label brand.

This mechanic looks at me with a straight face and tells me, "Ah, Autotech and Febi are exactly the same thing, it’s equally as good."

He tried to trap me with the sunk-cost fallacy. He knew I traveled 20km, he knew I paid for a ride, and he thought because I'm a young guy I would just be dumb, desperate, and passive enough to nod along and accept his piece-of-junk part. He was trying to charge me $80 for a part he probably grabbed down the road for $30, intending to pocket a massive cash markup.

I didn't argue. I called my actual mechanic to double-check, and he immediately told me to walk away because Autotech is unknown garbage. I turned around, declined the part, and walked right out of his yard, leaving him stuck holding a cheap box he spent his own cash to buy for a payday he didn’t get.

Be careful out there, guys. These Harare mechanics will look you dead in the face, and still try to slide you garbage just to chase a quick markup. Check your boxes, verify your brands, and never let these guys capitalize on your time or your transition.

DELETE ALL BOOKMARKS SOLUTION

As you all know X removed the three dots in the bookmarks section allowing you to delete all bookmarks. Well I found a solution. Open Chrome and install the extension “Old Twitter Layout(2025)” by dimden.dev Then open your account through that and navigate to bookmarks and the three dots should be back as normal and you can delete all your bookmarks. Thank me later!
