Honest advice needed: GATE ECE vs coding for placements

Hey everyone,

I’m currently in a Tier 3 college in west bengal (ECE branch), and my 3rd year is about to start in around 2 months. Honestly, in the past 2 years, I haven’t learned much. The only thing I know decently is Java up to OOP.

Right now I’m very confused about what to focus on.

My main goal is GATE ECE because from what I’ve understood, it gives better opportunities, environment, and long-term growth compared to what my college offers.

To give some context, the average package in my college is around 3–4 LPA, sometimes 6-8 LPA and mostly IT companies come, not from core companies. That’s why I feel GATE might be a better path.

But at the same time, I don’t want to completely ignore placements. Since I’m from a Tier 3 college, I feel like I should keep placements (coding/DSA) as a backup option.

So I’m stuck between:

  • Preparing seriously for GATE
  • Learning coding for placements (java, springboot, dsa)

My biggest confusion is: Is it realistically possible to balance both without messing up both?

if i am thinking anything wrong feel free to correct i genuinely need guidance

Whenever I start one, I start overthinking about the other and end up doing neither properly.

I’m fully willing to put in hours of hard work and stay consistent — that’s not the issue. I just need clarity on direction.

If anyone has been in a similar situation, please guide me:

  • What would you do if you were in my place?
  • Should I go all-in on GATE or balance both?
  • If balancing is possible, how should I structure it?

I feel really stuck right now and unable to start properly because of this confusion.

Any honest advice would really help. Thanks 🙏
