Strange discovery

When I was browsing a second-hand bookstore in Hong Kong, I happened to come across this disc in a corner of the store’s DVD section that was filled with cheap DVDs. I had never seen this particular release before, and the distinctive red casing of HD DVD immediately caught my attention.

There was a “Sample — Not for Resale” sticker over the barcode on the back of the case. I also inspected the data side of the disc, and it appeared to show no signs of oxidation. Still, just to be safe, I think I should rip the disc as soon as possible.

Foundation, by isaac asimov

Chinese edition.

Edit: Since many people have expressed curiosity, I will explain it here.

This cover was used for the first edition of Isaac Asimov's Foundation, published by Jiangsu Literature and Art Publishing House in 2012 (ISBN 9787539949796). After its release, the publisher reportedly faced public criticism and subsequently replaced the cover in later printings.

The four lines of text in the upper-left corner explain why these four guys appear on the cover:

  1. The classic 1977 film Star Wars borrowed its core concept from this book.
  2. The 2009 blockbuster Avatar, then the highest-grossing film in history, copied ideas from this book. (Both allegations have been denied.)
  3. However, Paul Krugman, recipient of the 2008 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, openly acknowledged that his economic theories were inspired by the Galactic Empire series.
  4. After the 911, The Guardian reported that Osama bin Laden modeled the strategy of his organization on the war tactics described in Foundation, even giving the group the same name.

A few days ago, I happened to come across this book for sale on a second-hand trading platform in China. The seller was asking 30 CNY (approx. 4.5 USD) including shipping. I took a quick look at the product photos and, seeing the exquisite binding and the special sprayed edges, I decided to buy it without hesitation. I managed to bargain the price down to 27 CNY, and the seller readily agreed.

The book arrived a few days later. As I was flipping through the copyright page, I was shocked to find that the printing date listed was in the future (September 2026)! I immediately realized something was up. After searching for information online, I discovered that on the official Penguin website, this specific edition is still only available for pre-order.

I strongly suspect this copy leaked out directly from a printing factory in China, but other than that, I know nothing else about it. I would be immensely grateful if anyone could provide more information regarding this edition.[gemini translate]
