Strange discovery

When I was browsing a second-hand bookstore in Hong Kong, I happened to come across this disc in a corner of the store’s DVD section that was filled with cheap DVDs. I had never seen this particular release before, and the distinctive red casing of HD DVD immediately caught my attention.

There was a “Sample — Not for Resale” sticker over the barcode on the back of the case. I also inspected the data side of the disc, and it appeared to show no signs of oxidation. Still, just to be safe, I think I should rip the disc as soon as possible.

Trying to get the firmware update (the one required for a lot of HD-DVD discs) to no avail.

I apologize in advance if this isn't the right place for this/is overly rambley, but I'm sorta hitting a brick wall atm. Basically I got the 360 player since that seems to be the most readily available way to use this format in the modern day. Unfortunately it doesn't have the update(s?) required to play a lot of them, such as Blade Runner The Final Cut and 2001 A Space Odyssey (basically anything with a white pamphlet with the relevant disclaimer inside the case).

I've tried both the 360 S and PC methods of updating, though both haven't gotten anywhere, though for different reasons. My PC just says "No Firmware found" or "Most up-to-date firmware already" (not actually but just paraphrasing) whenever I try to do it that way. Though with my 360 it's a different story, when I put an update-required disc in, it will recognise that an update is needed... but well, I've got a separate unrelated issue where my console won't connect to the internet at all for some reason (not with Wifi, Ethernet directly, Ethernet into my laptop as a middle man, and my phone's hotspot just doesn't show up as an option).

So yeah this is mostly just a rant, sorry again about that, but also a question I want to pose is... would it be easier to find a way to get the updates on PC? As opposed to trading in my 360 S for one without busted internet.

I'd be really grateful if anyone could shed some light on an easier way for me. That, and I'm genuinely excited to start collecting for this format once I get this thing working, just such a neat piece of history and whatnot.

As I’m sorting the Universal USA HD-DVD titles, I’ve got the first releases with the silver spine altogether.

As I’m sorting the Universal USA HD-DVD titles, I’ve got the first releases with the silver spine altogether.

A mixture of textured inside seastone cases and inside smooth finish cases.

Plus a mixture of “The Best in Picture Sound And Interactivity” and “The Look And Sound Of Perfect”.

Interestingly I have 2 different spines for Apollo 13 but the same code on them.

Tonight, I’ve started sorting and cataloging the HD-DVD collection

Tonight, I’ve started sorting and cataloging the HD-DVD collection.

Starting with USA Universal releases.

Jarhead has an inner textured seastone case and carries the tagline “The Best in Picture Sound And Interactivity” not “The Look And Sound Of Perfect”. Still has the feet on the cases though 😬

Frankenstein-ing Xbox 360 HD DVD Drives

I thought I had four Xbox drives, turns out I only have one that works, so time to get a backup. One is DVD-only (ie no blue laser) and two are totally dead (including my ultra-rare black one). So I opened the no-blu one up, and compared it to a drive I found in a drawer. That drive has old firmware (MC05 compared to MC08 on the broken one) and it also has a weird adapter board to expose it as regular IDE. Anyone know about the firmware differences, or whether I stand a chance of just using the drive as-is (I need to find some cables to try it). Are drives "bonded" to these power supplies? I know there are some magic numbers somewhere, for AACS to work, and I recall there were "red" and "green" drives back when I worked on this but that was for Xbox signing, should not effect use on a PC.

IDE adapter for Toshiba SD-S802A drive

In case anyone is curious, this is the adapter I pulled off my prototype Xbox 360 HD DVD drive that lets you use a regular IDE connection to it instead of whatever the built-in connector is.

So I just found my old HD DVD collection...

I was tidying up the storage room at my parents' house when I saw my collection of HD DVD discs next to the Xbox 360 player.

I no longer have a 360 to connect it to, nor do I want to have another console hooked up. So... what did I do?

I had been watching the market until I managed to get a cheap player. Luckily, yesterday a Toshiba HD-EP30 popped up on Vinted for 7€. I can’t wait for it to arrive at home!

The first thing I’ll do is try my discs. Hopefully I have no rotten discs.

However, I’m already browsing the market to expand the collection. Any recommendations?

Who would have thought I’d get interested in 'obsolete' technology and end up buying more discs instead of getting rid of them!

What are you doing with your bad discs, especially with multiples?

So here's my most extreme recent example (I have lots of pairs of good disc/bad disc). I picked up a very cheap stack of five Happy Feet HDDVDs -

- One was a total coaster - so bad the drive ejected it.

- After several dozen disc swaps I managed to get a clean ISO from the other four.

Now that I've pulled a clean ISO I've got a pile of partially-bad discs that I really don't have any more use for. I've already repurposed the coaster case for a bare copy of Elizabeth that I found in a "broken" XBox drive, but that still leaves a whole bunch of Unhappy Feet.

I always keep one copy for the shelf, working or otherwise, but I'm sure I'm not the only one with a growing pile of rotted discs. What do you like to do with those leftovers - toss them entirely? Keep the cases for spares and toss the discs? Donate them for preservation to someone else looking to do a disc-swap-o-rama?

I'm inclined to keep a few spare cases and maybe some spare inserts (those take no space) and toss the rest, but I'm curious if somebody has a more creative approach. I think back to some interesting artwork that people used to make out of all those AOL CDs back in the day, but I don't think I'm that creative.

Ripping to ISO - which tool?

I've been using https://github.com/TheDotSource/New-ISOFile which works, but I've started analyzing the UDF structures and I can see it changes them. This doesn't affect the files once its mounted, but it concerns me it's not a direct bit-copy of the optical disc.

Probably quicker for me to write my own now I understand more about UDF, but wondering what folks use for their HD DVD ISOs? (Note I am after bit-perfect ripping, not transcoding or AACS stuff).

Success Rate of my Collection

The STATS at the bottom reflect the success rate

Recently got a nice quality Xbox HD DVD to rip whatever in my collection would work, and ended up doing some homework so people can compare and contrast with my results. I went through every disc and wrote down if it would play on my Toshiba HD-A2, or rip on the new drive. Enjoy the results!

We're back to ripping HD DVDs

After taking a couple of months to work on other projects, I finally have enough time to start ripping the rest of my library (which is now at 75 movies). I have 33 from my last batch so now it's gonna be a lot of the movies I've found since then, trying to resurface and clean the movies that wouldn't read, and ripping multi disc sets. I'm glad to be back doing this

Another disc where this is the best version

Threw this on this morning, unfortunately over time my HD DVD collection has thinned due to bad disc's or being upgraded to 4K UHD.

This HD DVD brings a strong VC-1 and a competent DD+ track. The opening sequence, the celebration in the mead hall is very lively indeed.

Unfortunately if you get the bluray you'll trade that DD+ 5.1 for DD5.1.
