I own this staghorn fern, which is in less than optimal conditions, and finally have time to try and save it. But i want to ask first: is it already just dead?

For the first time in forever i have placed it in water, as seen on the picture.

As a gift i gave my girlfriend a bouquet of what i think is kalanchoe, which she then hang up to dry, in hopes of preserving them.

But as you can see on the pictures, they have startet to sprout agian, without any soil, any proper light and any watering on our end. Can someone explain how this is happening?
