Is this possible to do using freestanding target, or does emscripten need to be used

I'm looking in to go to electrical engineering in my second year but am tired of working retail. Any ideas on types of work I could to expand my skills I feel like I'm not learning anything valuable with the hours I put into retail. Are there any certs or coursers that could help my chances? I'm open to anything really.
