Do I really need root canal?

Last week I had to go to another dentist than usual get one of my wisdom teeth removed, they did a pantomogram. The dentist there told me I need root canal as soon as possible. I'm worried he just wanted to make more money off of me.

I find it weird since I'm only 19 and I get my teeth checked at least every two months since I have braces. I think that my dentist would have noticed something so important :(
