New Friends Picked Up Today

Viking Yesteryear Ivy Ball Amberina

Amberina Carnival LE Smith Moon and Stars Basket - this one is different to me since it is Amberina but also has some of that carnival glass iridescent look to it. Hadn't seen amberina with the iridescent before.

I mainly buy moon and stars amberina, but also will buy other (Viking, Fenton, Kanawha, Jeanette) if it catches my eye.

1985 Padres (83-79)

The 85 Topps set we really start to get into the inserts that previous years lacked and we are now so familiar with in these products.

In addition to the regular player cards you get the Steve Garvey Record Breakers for his errorless innings streak.

The Father and Son card with Bob and Terry Kennedy.

The super random throw back 1974 Draft Pick card with Billy Almon.

Then the Tony Gwynn All- Star card in addition to his regular player card. His player card is my favorite of the set with the flip up sunglasses.

Also thrown in are some Fleer and Donruss from 85.

Padres signed future HOFer Roberto Alomar as a free agent in 1985.

Steve Garvey lost his errorless innings streak that went from 1983-1985.

Lamar Hoyt tied a club record by winning 11 straight decisions.

Gary Templeton tied an MLB record with four intentional walks in a game.

In 85 Gwynn, Garvey, Nettles, Kennedy and Hoyt were all All-Star game starters. Gossage was also first team as a reliever. Gary Templeton was a reserve. Dick Williams was the NL Manager.

Lamar Hoyt was also the All-star game MVP and the NL won 6-1.

1984, our first world series appearance! Also only the second time the team had finished with a winning record (1978 was the other season).

I like the 84 Topps set. It's also about when I really started getting into cards as a kid.

I like the design with the color of the font, and the inset pictures with the pink background. Just clean looking cards. In addition to the regular cards we get another team Leaders card with Terry Kennedy and Dave Dravecky.

In honor of the 84 team I have also included some autographed cards from the 84 WS roster.

In addition to making it to the world series in 84 Tony Gwynn won his first batting title.

The team was not an offensive power house and relied on small ball and the pitching staff was last in the league in K/9 and at the bottom in HRs and Walks around.

A scrappy team with players with WS experience (Garvey, Nettles, Gossage) and rookies like Carmelo Martinez and Kevin McReynolds. With Gwynn they were the youngest OF in baseball in 84.

Other notables from 84. Padres signed Sandy Alomar Jr. and Goose Gossage.

Garvey was the NLCS MVP. Gwynn also led the league in hits (213).

Garvey, Gwynn and Gossage were all All-Stars.

I like this card design with the action shots and the inset portraits.

Of course with the 83 set we get the Tony Gwynn rookie card. He played in 86 games in 83 and hit .289. He started the season on the DL after re-injuring his wrist in winter ball that he had previously injured in the 82 season diving for a ball on astro turf. It was the only season of his career home hit under .300.

Also the return of the manager card with Dick Williams and a Padres leader card with Terry Kennedy and Tim Loller.

83 was another .500 season for the team and they became the second team since the1922 White Sox to finish .500 with a run differential of 0.

Steve Garvey was signed in the off-season heading into the 83 season. In the 83 season he set an NL record for 1207 consecutive games played. Lasting from 1975 to 1983 when he broke his thumb in a collision at home plate against the Braves in 1983.

Dave Dravecky and Terry Kennedy were both All-Stars in 1983.

Not a lot to write home about in the 1982 Topps Padre set. You get a final Ozzie card, a Future Stars card of non-future stars, and a Padres Leaders cards with Luis Salazar (.308 avg) and Juan Eichelberger (3.51 era).

A couple bonus Fleer/Donruss included. My favorite being the Ozzie Diamond King.

Also not much to write home about for the Padres in 1982 except for the debut of Tony Gwynn on July 19, 1982. He went 2-4 with an RBI and run scored.

Tim Loller had a good season in the mound going 16-9 with 150Ks

Notable for future Padres teams Ozzie was traded to St. Louis for Gary Templeton. Also Benito Santiago was signed as an amateur free agent in 1982.

Ruppert Jones was an All-Star Game reserve for the Padres. He did mange to hit a triple in the game. He was hitting .312 with 11 hrs at the all-star break, but would hit only 1 more HR the rest of the season and finished hitting .283.
