Another post to keep insanity away!
So I want to talk a "little" about the portrait theory. If you don't know what the portrait theory is, here's a "quick" summary:
The portrait theory talks about how at minute 2:00 of the teaser of the last year we see all the main characters being affected by some state of emotion, so why is this important? Well, many believe this is a nod to the last trailer of OMORI, specifically in minute 0:50, where we see all the characters are affected by emotions as well, but besides being a showcase of the gameplay, didn't you notice seeing something familiar? If you look at which emotions each member of the team has, it would look like this: OMORI is neutral, Aubrey is angry, Kel is happy, and Hero is sad. This was a way to foreshadow how each of them was dealing with Mari's death in the real-world sections before the game was released.
So applying that logic to the Rainy Mari teaser, it is believed that the devs have already told us how and what they planned with the story and which emotions the members of the friend group will indulge/cope with. Which leaves us with the following: Mari (Or rather, HIKIKO) and Kel are Manic, Aubrey is Miserable and Hero is Furious.
And I grabbed great interest with Kel's portrait, which is manic.
Compared to others when they are afflicted with manic status, Kel is standing out due to a simple fact: He is crying. Usually when we see someone reach the manic status, they show a "lost in the moment" face with dilated pupils, smiling maniacally, and usually also drooling with excitement or with any other "quirk", being above all a worrying sight, and the same could be said about Kel's, but for different reasons. When we see Kel affected, his eyes are completely wide shut, crying intensely, and he has a big smile that, from my perspective, thanks to the animation, looks like it's trembling, making it feel that compared to the others, Kel's is just fake, like he doesn't want to feel like that and he is just pretending to be manic.
But there is one thing: before this theory, the Rainy Mari team seemed to previously promote Kel being Furious state, this mostly seen on the Bee-Siege gameplay video where we see enemies always inflict Kel with this status, and also that image has been posted on their Tumblr, Twitter and YouTube.
So what could this mean?
First, we need to consider the aspect of Kel reaching phase three emotions. In previous posts I already talked about the probability, based on how they are used in the original story with OMORI and Basil in the Boss Rush, that it represents two things: one, their direct connection with the truth and two, being a representation of their mental state because of it, being symbolic of a poor and self-destructive mental stability caused by guilt, self-hatred, and/or other factors.
And with all of that previously said and combining it with the portrait theory itself with the other members of the friend group and previous theories, I think the dev team is going to focus on the repression of feelings and toxic positivity of Kel and also give him a similar route as Aubrey in the original, and I mean in the "the one left behind" aspect.
I mean, try to imagine it from the point of view of Kel: His best friend since he was little suddenly dies, and apparently because he killed himself. Then Mari, his older sister, confesses that she was the reason why he did it, and then things become only worse. The friend group breaks apart; Mari isolates herself out of shame. Aubrey, his best friend and the girl he probably had a crush on, follows soon; there is the whole ordeal with Basil, who is most likely dead too, and then there is Hero, in the original, I think Hero is one of the biggest reasons why Kel is the most seemingly mentally healthy of the group, as after his crashout, despite him screaming at Kel, he apparently recovered and functioned as Kel's role model for him to recover and now not be so preoccupied with him any longer. But of course in Rainy Mari, now Hero is a furious broken mess, and considering how Hero is the favorite child of the family, it makes certain that their parent would focus more on Hero, which leaves Kel absolutely alone now in trying to find a way to deal with his pain, making him now follow more toxic ways of coping, pretending to be happy to not worry his parents any longer about him while he also bottles up his feelings towards the whole situation.
Inspired by recent comparisons between the two mods and which one should be more appreciated on Twitter
