Hello everyone! And welcome back to another of my awful analysis/theory posts!

This time, I rushed to write down a theory I’ve had for a while so I could share it with you today, and I want to discuss the possible role of Mari's parents in Rainy Mari!

It might be too early to draw these kinds of conclusions or theories about them? Maybe! But hey, as I said before, we're running in circles at this point due to the lack of material to analyze, so I just decided to inspect a little bit more the old material that we already have to create a new hypothesis just for the sake of fun.

Sunny and Mari's parents are... quite enigmatic figures. We have so little information about them, from such nitpicks and some slight apparitions from them, with some of this information having to be taken with a grain of salt. Which led to vast interpretations of how they behaved towards their children, others, and themselves. So let's try to recapitulate all that we know about them prior and after the incident.

From the information prior to the incident, we know that their parents liked to travel a lot, constantly purchasing old books from their travels and sometimes even dragging Sunny and Mari along with them. They also had a particular interest in gardening-related hobbies; their mother practiced flower arranging—specifically Ikebana—while their father enjoyed growing and tending bonsai trees.

But now on focusing more on their personalities. For example, we know that their dad was usually a very strict man, always preaching "punctuality and responsibility" to Sunny and even having alarms set always 5 minutes early. He was apparently a very busy man, and from what I get, he was rarely at home, with him being pointed out to work on a somewhat tech-savvy or office-bound job. In another part, he was also very temperamental, with Sunny recalling how easily he got very mad every time he couldn't find the T.V. remote. And in a final note, it appears that he was very protective of Mari, this being pointed out by Basil in the photo album in the picture of Mari and Hero sleeping together during Basil's birthday, with him saying that Mari's dad would get mad if he saw the photo, which means he didn't like Hero as a boyfriend for his daughter and didn't approve of him as such, or if you want to truly push the meaning of the words in this case, you could say this is a way to say that Hero and Mari were never a couple because of her dad, or at very least they kept their relationship hidden from him.

And now their mother is also an interesting case. From all that I gathered, one of the many quirks that she has is that she has a problem with being a compulsive shopper, having interest in furniture, porcelain vases, and tacky ornaments, and telling herself that she can't resist a "good sale." Also, just like their dad, it is pointed out that their mom was also a busy person; this is implied when we interact with the phone besides the stairs, being revealed to be their mom's personal phone that once was in their room beside her side of the bed, which implies that she was constantly called from her job to go to work. And for a final note, while there is a popular belief that their mother liked Sunny the most, I think that she loved both of them in the same manner, BUT she had a slight favoritism towards Mari. I say this because of the Ikebana arrangement; when you interact with it, it mentions how Mari and her mother got into flower arrangement classes, and sometimes they drag Sunny to make him join them, but that's the thing, it says it is just between Mari and her mom and sometimes Sunny, which shows that their mother liked Mari slightly more; after all, she is her only daughter.

But now let's talk about the most complicated part: them after the incident.

In this part of the story they show a more complex side of them due to them grieving the death of their daughter.

In the case of the dad, we know that he certainly left the family after what happened. This is implied by the description of their bed, comparing it to the one of the memories, saying that it belonged to both of them. Now it only says it is now Sunny's mom's bed, and this is proved even more in one of the voicemails left by her, where she reminds Sunny that they will move from the house and start their new life in the city. She just says "both of us" and not "all of us", which would be weird if Sunny's dad were still with them.

And this just leaves us with their mom as the sole caretaker for Sunny. While never physically present during the events of the story, she appears through voicemails and notes scattered around the house, where she shows love and concern about Sunny, yet at the same time she shows to be very neglectful in taking care of him, even to the point where it feels like she abandoned Sunny as well.

But why did they behave like that? Well, there is one possible answer, and we can find it in one place: Blackspace

During two of the Blackspace sequences (if I remember correctly), we can find two shadow figures that obviously represent both of his parents. The one that represents his dad, we find him trying to chop a tree down; when we approach him, he pushes OMORI away, saying that he isn't his son, and then we later see him leaving the house in his car. For their mother is a simpler scene where we see her sit on a sofa just saying to Sunny that she lost her only daughter, and now she doesn't want to lose her only son, and saying that he hopes he behaves like a good boy.

Most people assume that this is a way to say that they know the truth about Mari's death, which would explain these interactions and their behavior, but others say otherwise, pointing out there is a possibility that these scenes aren't reliable since they are in the Blackspace, a place where there are not only representations of represented memories but also intrusive thoughts and internal fears of Sunny, so there is a possibility that either these memories are corrupted or are just manifestations of Sunny's guilt and fear. There is also one interaction in the Deeper Well, where it reinforces that only Sunny, Basil, and Mari know the truth of what happened that day, but once again, this is from Sunny's perspective, so he may not know who really knows what happened that day.

So let's try to see it under two perspectives: One where they know the truth and one where they don't.

In the one where they know the truth, it paints Sunny's dad as someone who can't forgive Sunny due to him taking the life of his sister and covers it up as a suicide to escape consequences, which makes him abandon Sunny and his wife for taking the side of their son. While Sunny's mom is now afraid of the consequences that his son may face due to what he has done, and she tries to protect her son the best she can so she won't lose him as well.

While in the option where they don't know, it paints Sunny's dad as someone who can't take the death of his daughter and puts all the blame for this on Sunny, believing that he is solely responsible for Mari's suicide, which makes him disown Sunny and leave him and his wife behind. And Sunny's mom is now someone who feels like she failed her only daughter, and now she can't fail her only sons, trying the best she can to comfort him while being afraid of taking action, making this end with mixed results.

Well, we took a big detour, but now knowing more of them, we can have a better picture of who they are. Now what can we assume of them for Rainy Mari? Seeing all of the previous points and clues of what we see of the real world section seen briefly in last year's teaser, I came to this conclusion:

1. Both of them will still be together.

2. Both of them will appear on the mod.

3. Both of them will still care about Mari.

Now, why do I believe this? In one part, in all the previous evidence I gave before, it's apparent that both of the parents have a preference for Mari over Sunny, even if slightly; after all, she is the first and only daughter they had.

In another part, we see the conditions from the house, and we can appreciate that there are a lot of things that represent Mari's mom's presence in the house, such as parts of the porcelain bases that she collects, and in the garage area we see what I can assume is Mari's dad's car.

Another thing is that Mari is apparently the only one that is moving away, presumably to college, and seeing a lot of boxes inside her room, implying that Mari is getting either a dorm in her college or an apartment near it, so besides the possibility of Mari grinding in jobs and in her school to get a scholarship or enough money to pay her expenses, there is a bigger chance that her parents are paying those expenses.

And in a final note, maybe this is the most insane part of my rambling, but there is also the toolshed in the backyard, and we can assume that while it might be for his parents, since we discussed how both of them had hobbies related to gardening, but I think that this may be actually for Mari, after all, who right now has a lot of things going on their head related to plants and flowers? Mari. So I think her parents built that toolshed for her to have a new hobby after the incident, since she may no longer want to play piano anymore.

But once again, why? Well, considering that maybe either Sunny will commit suicide or possibly still get pushed down the stairs, but minus the staging as a suicide or disappearing since I doubt that Mari wouldn't do anything of that, it may benefit the perspective of her parents towards her, since Mari will most likely take responsibility for her actions and her parents benefitting her more, it may make them reconsider how they behaved as parents and will instead try to take care of their daughter in these tough moments, something similar to the proposal made by supple_onion for their fanfic "Dissociation".

This time I want to continue my own thoughts on the Portrait Theory (If you don't know what I am talking about, you can read the previous post right HERE), previously talking about Kel and my thoughts on his manic portrait.

Now this time, I want to discuss one of the most iconic and well-written characters in the original game, our favorite ribbon/punk girl: Aubrey!

Aubrey is one of my favorite characters of the main group and OMORI in general, alongside Sunny and Mari. So I'm heavily invested in seeing what the Rainy Mari Team has planned for her. So let's try to analyze all the material that we have provided about her through the lenses of this theory.

For one thing, even if this theory is proven wrong, I think it is clear enough that Aubrey is still going to be miserable. From all the teasers and gameplay that have been shown to us, the enemies have always prioritized making Aubrey enter the "sad" status of the emotional spectrum, and not only that, but also her dead portrait shows her teru teru bozu doll crying as well, so it's almost sure that Aubrey is certainly in some grade of sadness.

Now, the question is why? Usually when we think of Aubrey in the OMARI AU, we imagine her taking a similar role to Kel, a.k.a. The happy one, the one who pulls Mari out of her house and is more similar to the "old Aubrey", the kind girl who liked cute things instead of being the punk girl blinded by anger.

Most of this characterization comes from the idea that Aubrey won't succumb to fury now that Mari is alive; after all, Mari was one of the most important and influential figures in Aubrey's life, so now that her role model is still alive, she doesn't need to cope, but it's not that simple. The anger problems of Aubergine not only come from her being very emotional, but they were also a problem that was brewing for a long time, combining a long list of problems that were happening in her life, such as the problems in her household, the death of Mari, her father leaving her behind, her mother sinking deeper into alcoholism, the shattering of the friend group, and her getting the wrong idea that her old friends moved on from Mari's death. And finally, the straw that broke the camel's back was seeing the photo album, the thing that in her eyes is a symbol of their friendship, being completely vandalized with black marker, all of this apparently being done by Basil, her first friend, which made her finally explode.

Ok, maybe I went off the rails for a moment, but what I am trying to say is that I don't see her gaining the same role as Kel, as she lacks the same mental resilience that he has, and also she has a lot of problems that make it harder for her to be the one coping with "happiness." But now back on track with the main theme, why is Aubrey miserable? Besides the already known facts about her life, we can assume she will have the same step-by-step build-up for her to be sad, so let's look through the setting itself and parts of the story that have been provided for us so far.

First off, let's begin with the most important change: Sunny's death. While it's true that Mari was extremely important in Aubrey's life, so is the rest of the friend group, especially Sunny. Mari and Hero were people that she looked up to. Basil is her first friend. Kel, despite the constant bickering with him, you can tell that they are the best of friends. And lastly, there is Sunny, who had a more intimate relationship and role with her: He was her confidant.

Sunny and Aubrey had a very unique friendship, this being shown in a very special moment between them before the accident, that being the swig talks, where Aubrey would vent for hours to Sunny about the problems in her life, showing that Aubrey trusted Sunny more than anyone in the friend group, probably even more than Mari. This was even further proved when we visited her house during "One day left" (from what I could remember) where Kel and Hero were surprised by Aubrey's life conditions in her house, except Sunny (or at least from what we could assume), showing us that Aubrey viewed Sunny as someone she could trust—someone who wouldn't judge her for the more complicated aspects of her life—which leads her to confide in him and tell him things that she finds shameful and even show him those problems, this being implied in the Hikikomori route (I think it was there) where we see perfect replicas of the beds of each member of the friend group, and this includes Aubrey too, implying that Sunny was in fact inside Aubrey's house before, proving even more how much she trusted him.

So it's easy to see why Aubrey may be sad. Beyond the Sunburn lenses (In which I indulge too lol), we can assume that most likely Aubrey will blame herself for whatever happened to Sunny. From what we can interpret from the swing talks, Aubrey was the one to always talk about her problems while Sunny just listened to her. So if Sunny either dies via the push over the top of the stairs, genuine suicide or gets buried in the backyard while being covered up as him disappearing, Aubrey will get the idea that Sunny not only didn't trust her but also likely believed she could have done something to stop what happened—setting her on a path dominated by sadness.

Secondly, the friend group itself. If we consider the portrait theory to the other characters in the mod and the fact that they reach phase 3 emotions, Aubrey will pretty much see a worse collapse of her friend circle than in the original, which can even make her guilt problems grow even more (and add extra points if Basil dies or goes to the iconic Emosil route).

And third and final point: Mari herself.

I am a firm believer that in any OMARI setting, Mari will always be the final point of influence for how Aubrey behaves with her actions and words, and I think Rainy Mari is going in a similar direction, and I assume this because of the things talked about earlier, in this case how enemies prioritize making her sad and her dead portrait, because this shows how much aware is Mari of how Aubrey has been handling the death of Sunny; however, there is something more to add that can tell us about her and that is her skills

The iconic overanalyst, u/florentinomain00f, has previously made a great analysis of the importance of the skills in Rainy Mari as it can tell us more about possibly how the characters will behave in the Real World sections.

In the case of Aubrey, compared to Kel and Hero, she is the most radically changed of the three in the terms of her skills. While Kel apparently remains the same and Hero just wins "Juice Cut", an offensive skill that lets him refill the juice of the party, Aubrey has "Charm," a skill originally from Hero that makes enemies focus on him, and "Lend Plushie", the equivalent of "Massage".

The user made the hypothesis that this would mean that Aubrey took a similar path to Hero in the original, someone who becomes the universally loved person in Faraway Town while hiding their sadness. But let me tell you my theory.

While you can read her original offensive skills as a way to illustrate her anger in the real world, you can also say it's a way to reflect her overall passionate and fierce personality and her strength of character, morals and convictions. So if she lacks all of that and is replaced instead with more passive/defensive skills, I think it means she will become the opposite of the punk aubrey, someone more "insecure and delicate," someone who doesn't trust in her will anymore since it has already failed those who she cherished.

This doesn't necessarily mean that Aubrey will not be the same stubborn girl that we know, just that maybe she won't as sure of her actions and instead we'll see her behave more with a "don't blame yourself, blame me" mentality

But why then? Well, once again I believe this is because of Mari. Because we know that Mari won't be as much of a recluse as her little brother, I think at one point Aubrey and Mari interacted, and Mari said or did something that made all the problems of guilt she had until that point finally burst and made her get consumed with the idea that all of this was because of her.

Today, we have two special announcements.

First off, after 89 days, the Raniy Mari Dev Team has officially posted once again!!! That's right, the team has published the information sheet of Sunny! Publishing it on their YouTube, Tumblr, Twitter and Reddit (in this case, right here on this subreddit), giving information about his role in the headspace and also confirming the name of Mari's headspace: Mariland.

Let's hope that this means that the Rainy Mari demo release is already close so we can play it!

And lastly, but not least important, today, July 20th, we also celebrate the birth of the most important boy in the world: The second heart of the friend group and someone who definitely did nothing wrong, Sunny! Kind and shy, and despite not saying much, this boy always manages to leave the best impression on everyone he meets, so congratulate Sunny, guys!
