Canada seems to have a surprisingly powerful hand when it comes to things the US actually needs.

Potash — a major Canadian export that the US relies on for agriculture

Aluminum — Canada is a major supplier to American manufacturers

Oil and natural gas — especially difficult for the US to replace quickly in some regions

Hydroelectricity — including electricity exported from Quebec, Manitoba and Newfoundland & Labrador to the US Northeast

Critical minerals — nickel, uranium, cobalt, lithium, etc.

Lumber — another area where the US depends heavily on Canadian supply

Uranium — an important Canadian strategic export

Agricultural products — redirecting more food exports toward Europe and Asia

Ports and transportation infrastructure — expanding Canada’s ability to get resources to Europe and Asia rather than having everything flow south

Europe — dramatically increasing trade with the EU under CETA

Japan and South Korea — expanding long-term resource agreements

India and other Asian markets — building alternative customers for Canadian commodities

China — potentially pursuing substantially deeper trade relations, including some form of expanded free-trade agreement
