Bow tilt question
Hello all, I have a quick question regarding the bow and tilting the stick towards/away from the player to play with flat or angled hair.
I’ve been taking cello lessons for several weeks now and my teacher keeps asking me to tilt the bow stick away from me so that I play with only flat hair on all strings. This makes my wrist bend a lot and I’m to apply weight/pressure towards the strings, so not directly down towards the ground. This is very contrary from what I’ve generally read and heard through online cello resources where it’s often suggested to tilt the stick towards you/hair towards the bridge so that the wrist is at a more neutral angle, you’re using less hair, and you can apply pressure down towards the ground.
The way my teacher tells me feels especially terrible on the A string when my arm is outstretched, wrist extremely bent, and I’m attempting to pronate when approaching the tip of the bow.
What’s actually correct? Should I trust my teacher and play everything with flat hair/stick pointed away from me? Should I incorporate tilting the stick towards me and using a bit less hair which feels way better/natural to me?
Any thoughts and feedback is greatly appreciated!
