Perspective from an alumnus: WVSU lost its “campus essence”
A couple of weeks ago, I made a short visit to where it all began, almost 10+ years since I graduated and physically went back. To my surprise, I was frustrated by how they had built buildings everywhere, making it seem like the whole main campus was packed inside a sardine can. I don’t know whether this is a planning issue or if they could acquire another university property as an extension, but losing tree cover is inimical to any adaptation and sustainability efforts that the university is trying to push, especially with Iloilo City experiencing the brunt of extreme (and dangerous) heat indexes.
WVSU, back in its prime, was iconic for its campus trees and the essence of having it as a nurturing space for learning. It is sad to see all of it being lost in the name of “growth and development.”
