Recommendations for hospitals in BC for a new grad RN?

Hi everyone,

I’m a new grad RN from Ontario and I’m planning to move to BC for my first nursing job.

I’d really like to hear from nurses who have actually worked in BC hospitals. Which hospitals would you recommend for a new grad, and are there any you would avoid?

The things I would like to know are:

  • Supportive orientation and preceptors
  • Good unit culture and approachable managers
  • Reasonable staffing/workload for a new grad
  • Affordable cost of living nearby

I’m considering hospitals in Interior Health, Fraser Health, Vancouver, and Northern Health, but I’m open to anywhere in BC. For my first position, I’m mainly interested in starting on a medicine unit but I’m also quite interested in Emergency nursing.

Since I’m coming from Ontario and don’t know the hospitals in BC very well, hospital- or unit-specific experiences would be especially helpful. Thank you very much!

At Kelowna General Hospital, Which unit would you recommend for a new grad RN?

Hi everyone,

I’m a new grad RN considering starting my nursing career at Kelowna General Hospital.

For current or former KGH nurses: which unit would you recommend for a new grad? Are there particular units that have a good reputation for support and good team culture?

I’d also really appreciate any insight on:

  • Workload
  • Availability of extra shifts/overtime

I’d especially appreciate unit-specific experiences.

Thank you very much!
