I’ve been switched to the 11 gift group

I first noticed something was up yesterday. I collect the gifts and run the 6 ads during my morning routine. Last night I noticed I had 4 ads waiting. I wondered if I had possibly not completed the full set in the morning, so I watched them.

This morning when I woke up I saw the number 11 on my gifts. I’m now in the lucky group. I got over 800 tokens from ads, which is very rare if you’re in the 7 gift group. Hope this lasts.

Gem Booster Disappeared

I haven’t had a chance to play today so I hadn’t used my booster. It has now disappeared. This might be because we will get that Jimothy token animal soon. Has anyone else seen theirs disappear, too?

Events this week

Grandparent’s Day is our Monday event. We did have this around the same time last year, just a week earlier. I forget what we were collecting. Leave it in the comments if you do.
Egyptian Oasis is back for its second week. And it looks like Written in the Stars was only a two week thing, because we have Verdant Woods this week. If you didn’t finish Written in the Stars and you get it as an alternate, please let me know in the comments. I don’t think it’s a seasonal thing, but if it were it would not appear as an alternate. And if you do get it, could you confirm the behaviour of the bonus wheel? How many does it take to fill, and does it give you a guaranteed piece?

[Highlight] Aussie Rules 🤝 NFL

Last night in the AFL Semi Final between Fremantle Dockers and the Geelong Cats at Optus Stadium in Perth, the goal umpire signalled the goal using the NFL gesture, reflecting what had been done earlier in the day at the MCG by the referee, using the AFL gesture to signal the goal.
I thought it was a great demonstration of mutual respect.

Completing Written in the Stars

Largely with the help of Wildlife, I completed Written in the Stars on both my Apple account and my Android account. I recorded how many boxes it took and what I collected on the way. The Apple one was easily done, and I did spend a little to rush the SBC (maybe 800 or so), but the Android took me an additional 120 or so levels to get the boxes needed.

Reading the information

I recorded how many boxes I had opened each time I obtained a portrait, or completed the bonus wheel. Where it has brackets around it, that was where I obtained a piece of that portrait from the bonus wheel, but did not complete the portrait.

For example, in the Android list, on the 55th box, I completed the bonus wheel and got a piece of the Gemini portrait, but didn’t complete it. On the 115th box, I got the last Gemini piece.

I also recorded when I got the first duplicate piece, and also the position of that piece (column A-D, row 1-3), since I think most people probably don’t know all the zodiac symbols. I also included the emoji for that symbol. As others have pointed out, Libra is a mismatch.

How much effort is needed to complete an announced portrait event?

This is a question I’ve considered before in different comments, but haven’t done a post on the algorithm used to complete the announced portrait events. Since we’re getting a new one this week, I figured it was time.

As some background for newer players, the portrait events were once very hard to complete. It could take many hundreds of boxes since you would never get any guaranteed pieces for completing the bonus wheel. There were also no binocular animals to help initially. When we did get them, the best one was the elephant. We didn’t have the Spooky Black Cat, Hippo, Snowman, or the Cow.

Now, of course, the portrait events work differently. You still have 12 portraits which require 3 pieces each to complete, for a required total of 36 pieces. You still have three rarity classes - common, uncommon, and rare. It still gets harder and harder to draw a rare piece as you complete the set. The difference now is the bonus wheel. Previously, it would take 5 duplicate pieces to fill the bonus wheel, which would give you a bonus piece. This piece could be, and almost always would be, another duplicate which would flow back to the wheel.

Now the wheel requires 40 duplicate pieces to fill (or 20 boxes), but once filled you are guaranteed to get a piece you don’t have. This difference makes it much easier to complete the set, and sets a limit to how many more boxes you need to complete it.

Calculating the lower and upper limits of needed boxes

How many boxes it will take will of course vary by luck, but we can determine with certainty lower and upper limits with some simple reasoning.
Lower limit - since we need 36 pieces to complete the set, and we get 2 pieces in every box, the lowest number of boxes needed is 36/2‎ = 18

This is the case where you are the luckiest person in the world and you draw 2 needed pieces in every one of the first 18 boxes you open. Easy peasy, but unlikely in the extreme.

The upper limit is a little harder to work out, but still rather straightforward.
There are basically two sources for the 36 pieces needed. 1) Directly drawn from a box, and 2) Obtained from completing the bonus wheel.

The upper limit would require getting the maximum possible from the bonus wheel, and the minimum drawn from a box.

For us to get a duplicate, we need to have completed at least one portrait. However, it is also a feature of the boxes that we never get two of the same portrait pieces in the same box. Since we have to draw two different pieces in every box, it would take at least 3 boxes to complete one portrait. And in fact, the other portrait piece would need to be repeated in the three boxes so we don’t increase the number of portrait pieces being directly drawn from boxes instead of the bonus wheel. So our first three boxes would need to be AB, AB, AB.

To explain what I mean a bit more, if we try to vary the combinations of portraits in the first three boxes, for instance instead imagine that we draw AB, AC, AC, we increase the number of portrait pieces coming from boxes. In this example, the fourth box could have a duplicate, A, but the other one couldn’t be. If it were again AC, then now we would have 7 portrait pieces out of the 36 needed come from boxes, so there are only 29 left to come from the bonus wheel. Any combination of draws from boxes that you could imagine that is not the same pair repeated over and over again, would result in more than 6 portrait pieces coming from boxes, and so fewer coming from the bonus wheel.

In fact to maximise the number of portrait pieces coming from the bonus wheel, we would need to draw the same two portrait pieces over and over again until the set was complete. This would be:
3 boxes to complete the first two portraits, and then,
30 x 20‎ = 600 boxes to complete the remaining ten portraits using the bonus wheel

So the maximum is 603 boxes.

Of course both of these limits are extremely unrealistic. The only sets I ever completed using the new algorithm, and recorded the results, were Trick or Treat and Tis the Season on another account on my Android device. Both of them took exactly 96 boxes total to complete.

If you’re mid progress, and you’re trying to work out how many boxes you might need to finish, then the maximum amount can be worked out easily.

Take the number of missing portrait pieces (not portraits, the pieces required), multiply by 20, and then minus half the number of duplicates you have currently in the wheel.

So suppose you need 15 pieces, and your duplicate bonus wheel is half full, i.e. 20 duplicates.
15x20 - (20/2)‎ = 290 boxes

Of course, you’re likely to find a few more directly from the boxes while you’re completing it, and this would reduce the number needed by 20 each time.

How many levels needed

It takes 4.44 levels on average to gather the binoculars needed to complete a box.

So if one were a glutton for punishment and wanted to earn all your boxes without the help of animals, to complete:
the upper limit mentioned before: 603x4.44 = 2,677 levels
the 96 boxes it would probably take: 96x4.44=426 levels

Wildlife Assistance

But of course, you can get a lot of help from the animals, through banking prior to the event, and running animals during. Remember, it takes 10 binoculars to get one box.
My banking preparation is:
- Cow 9 boxes
- Jolly Snowman 7.2 boxes
- Spooky Black Cat 5 boxes
- Hippo 10.4 boxes
- Elephant 3.6 boxes
- Swan 3.4 boxes
- Sloth 6.7 boxes
- Penguin 1.2 boxes
- Camel 0.8 boxes
- Bat Eared Fox 0.5 boxes
- Blue Footed Booby 2.3 boxes
- Moose 2.3 boxes
- Long eared Owl 0.2 boxes
- Tree Frog 0.3 boxes

Total from banking: 52.9

Then during the 24 hours of the event, I will run:
- Spooky Black Cat (6 hours): 3x5‎ = 15
- Elephant (6 hours): 3x3.6‎ = 10.8
- Penguin (4 hours): 4x1.2‎ = 4.8
- Hippo (8 hours): 1x10.4‎ = 10.4

Total from animal activities during the event: 41

52.9+41‎ = 93.9 boxes

This brings me almost all the way there. ~30 levels of play should pretty much do the rest. Though I’ll probably do about 150 levels for good measure.

Also, PF had indicated a while back that Route 66 would be finishing at the end of August, but there hasn’t been any announcements so far as to what is coming next. They did say last year that Wild West would come back since they only offered it for a month, but it’s unclear whether that is still the intention. There is currently no countdown clock so I would expect we’ll still have Route 66 for a bit until they figure it out. If you do want to finish the portrait set, I wouldn’t dawdle.
