Retrofitted Comptip H16?

I've recently come into an early 80s Hobie 16 which has been partially retrofitted with a Comptip mast. The mast top section is composite but it still has the older style halyard and has reefing points on the sail. I like having the reefing ability but it is very hard to pull the halyard lock swaged lugs over the two small sheaves at the mast head (instead of the older style single large sheave). Any advice for making this work (other than abandoning the reefing points and getting a new style halyard)? Maybe filing a bit of a bullet shape into the leading edge of the lugs to help them over the sheave?

I'm not concerned about class legality or conductivity.

Sedate Hobie 16 sailing?

I'm a new owner of an older Hobie 16 with some cat experience but a relatively experienced single-hull sailor. I have two pre-teen sailors who'd like to join me but aren't super confident and I don't want to put them in a situation that is (or can be perceived to be) dangerous. What advice do you have for a fun day of sailing with:

  1. Zero risk of capsize

  2. Zero risk of anyone (helm especially) going overboard

  3. A perception of being in control at all times.

This will be sailing on a prairie lake with gusty and shifty winds and ideally we'd not be cancelling in most wind conditions.
