Any hope for this mast?

Update:

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Having heard no dire warnings I rigged it this afternoon and had a dandy sail. The boat handled beautifully, flying hull and all.

My original mast is nice and safe hanging on the side of our house just in case this one folds up but I think it is looking pretty good.

Unfortunate I can't put photos in reply comments here.

-----

I picked up this '84 H16 after my'73 H16 had a catastrophic hull failure. I hadn't noticed the curve to the mast.

There's no obvious trauma - it isn't folded or dented. I'm wondering if it sat for a long time on its side on the trailer and just sagged.

Thoughts? Should I try it? Or use my old mast? I think I'd have to swap the mast bases?

Recognize This Boat?

Bought this boat used when I was about 19yo. Sold it to someone near the Charlotte area in the early 2000s. Was always extra fun to raise those sails on July 4th.

Retrofitted Comptip H16?

I've recently come into an early 80s Hobie 16 which has been partially retrofitted with a Comptip mast. The mast top section is composite but it still has the older style halyard and has reefing points on the sail. I like having the reefing ability but it is very hard to pull the halyard lock swaged lugs over the two small sheaves at the mast head (instead of the older style single large sheave). Any advice for making this work (other than abandoning the reefing points and getting a new style halyard)? Maybe filing a bit of a bullet shape into the leading edge of the lugs to help them over the sheave?

I'm not concerned about class legality or conductivity.

Hobie Wave realism check

hi

ive been looking to get a sailboat, but I can’t really store a trailer. I do have a yakima rack I regularly transport two kayaks.

my town has moring on a small lake. so I would likely setup once a year. but take down into prices for transport.

second question is open trampoline ok for kids or is it really too technical.

Carolina Hobie Cat owners, I need help

I bought a Hobie Tiger a few years ago and have had her in storage until now. She’s in good shape, just hasn’t been used recently. I need someone with any kind of Hobie cat experience to help me make sure the rigging is good, make sure I’m not overlooking anything, and perhaps give me a pointer or two on how best to easily step the mast on a regular basis. Knowledge of the Tiger would be great but I don’t think absolutely necessary. I live in the Charlotte area and willing to come to you if within a reasonable radius of the city. And yes, we can definitely take her out on the water!

Would it be better to get a Hobie mirage tandem island or a adventure/solo

I was wondering if it would be better to just get a solo with trampolines to hold other people couse it would be so much cheaper. Or if I get the tandem would it be more difficult to sail solo? Also I heard if it's over 18 ft which the tandem is I needs to be registered.

H16 delam and options

Let me start by saying a couple things
1- I’m aware of the screw and glue route
2- I’m not looking for the cheapest or quickest option. This boat has been in the family for 50 years now and has a hull number of 2499.

I would like to do the best resto possible so it lasts another couple generations. Given the option of a brand new boat or this one, even at the same cost, I’d choose mine. Stupidly, yes, but you can’t get the past back once it’s gone.

I have a couple spots of deformation on the sides of the hulls and development of soft spots. Is it realistic to split the hulls, rebuild them top and bottom, and then rebond them with structural epoxy? I don’t need to race it, I just want it to work with 1-2 people on it.

I’ve done carbon fiber repairs and building bicycles before, but not specifically fiberglass or boats.

Thanks for any advice.

Just picked up my first Hobie Bravo! ⛵️ what’s next?

I’ve been on the prowl for several years waiting for one these to pop up locally, and it finally happened! Brought it home on its first “boat on a boat” voyage, and I’m already planning a few upgrades.

This will be a great addition to the fleet (H20, H17 Sport, and H16), but more importantly, it’s the perfect boat for getting my kids single handing.

I’d love to hear from other Bravo owners and rotomold owners . What mods or upgrades have you found worthwhile? I’m thinking about:
● EVA deck foam/seating
● A trapeze setup for the kids
● Custom vinyl graphics
● Performance or comfort upgrades
● Maintenance on the hulls and deck

What have you done that made your Bravo even more fun? I’d love to see photos of your boats, hear about your favorite mods, or learn from any lessons you’ve picked up along the way. Looking forward to getting this nimble cat on the water and letting her purrrrr.

Hope you have a Hobie Day ✌🏻

Newbie question-Hobie 17 rigging

Hey all, I’m a new Hobie owner and trying to figure out how to rig my Hobie 17. Found a few good YouTube videos, but wondering if someone can tell me (1) is this is right place to attach this rigging? The second picture is the very front of the hulls. And (2) how do I secure it? Just a small shackle?

The bottom job continues...

The bottom job continues. Thursday we faired it with 407. Friday I sanded and added a little more filler. Yesterday I sanded again and laid on 3 coats of epoxy and graphite. Today I wet sanded the topsides to 2000. It'll probably be too hot to lay up the other hull this week, but hopefully this boat will see the water soon.

Mast step link alternative

Hello guys, I recently purchased a HC16 and saw that the cheapest mast step link I could find was around 40euro which I don’t want to spend on a piece of metal since i am kinda on a budget because of buying my boat ( I sail alone so I must use a mast step link ). Also, do you know if you can step the mast when you’re on the water alone ( by using the jib halyard) ?

Traveling with your Hobie

Question for the Hobie crowd:

How far would you travel for a weekend if a Hobie was already rigged on the beach waiting for you?

I'm testing an idea at Lake Elsinore and wondering whether sailors see value in not having to trailer, rig, launch, and retrieve.

Curious what you all think.
