Looking to practice a language in Playa del Carmen? 🌎

A small local tip for anyone staying in Playa and wanting to practice Spanish, English, German, French, or whatever language you're learning.
Every Wednesday from 8:00 PM onward, people get together at Zitla, on Calle 34 between 5th and 10th Avenue, for a free language exchange.
There's no class and no fee. You simply show up, grab a drink if you want, meet people and start talking.
What I like most about it is the atmosphere. I've seen people arrive just wanting to practice a language and end up making real friendships, local connections and even plans to explore Playa together.
If you're traveling solo, new in town, living here for a while, or simply want to meet people outside the usual tourist scene, it's a nice place to start.
📍 Zitla – Calle 34, between 5th & 10th Ave
🗓 Wednesdays
🕗 From 8:00 PM
💬 Language exchange: free
Sometimes the best way to experience a city isn't through an attraction—it's through the people you meet there.

A simple safety tip when hiring a tour guide in Mexico

Before booking, ask for the full name and credential number of the guide who will actually accompany you. Official guides are accredited by Mexico’s Ministry of Tourism, known as SECTUR, and can be checked in its public directory.

The credential has a QR code that can be scanned to help verify the guide’s information and current accreditation. This means the guide has completed the required professional training, which includes areas such as Mexican history and culture, group management and first aid.

You may also hear the term RNT, which means Registro Nacional de Turismo. Tourists can consult official tourism providers here:

https://rnt-consulta.sectur.gob.mx/

You can also consult the official guide directory here:

https://guiadeturistas.sectur.gob.mx/

This does not guarantee that every tour will be perfect, but it gives you a verified identity and an official record of who is responsible for guiding you. Whether you book with a large company or a small local operator, you have every right to ask who your guide will be, whether there are mandatory shopping stops and exactly what is included.

I’m sharing a photo of my own credential as an example of what travelers should look for. Transparency creates trust, and a professional guide should have no problem showing their credentials.

Chess Is Growing in Playa del Carmen ♟️

Today, thanks to everyone who supports chess in Playa del Carmen, we have today a small tournament at the Jaime Torres Bodet Library.
It was a humble event, but full of good energy, respect and friendly competition. We had players from Mexico, France, the USA, Spain and Germany, all sharing the same love for chess.
We want this community to keep growing. Anyone who wants to learn, practice or play while visiting Mexico is very welcome. Volunteers who would like to help with languages, organization or teaching are also appreciated.
There are no cash prizes yet. For now, the real prize is meeting new people, enriching the soul and making our community stronger.
Thank you to everyone who joined and supported us. ♟️

Would you change one habit to help protect a cenote?

I spent part of today at Xunan Ha, and something happened there that got me thinking.

There was a discussion because the owner politely asked some visitors not to enter the cenote wearing sunscreen or bringing food into the water. Some people thought it was unreasonable, others understood right away.

Xunan Ha is one of the most beautiful cenotes in the area. The underwater visibility is amazing, underwater photography there is incredible, divers love it, and the platform is perfect for jumping and taking great photos.

The sunscreen rule is not because they want to be difficult. Even water-resistant sunscreen leaves residue that stays on the surface and can affect the water little by little. If you know you are going there, a long sleeve UV shirt is a much better option.

One thing many visitors don't realize is that the Yucatán Peninsula is very different. We don't have fresh water rivers, lakes or lagoons on the surface. We depend on the underground river system under our feet, one of the biggest in the world. Cenotes are connected, so taking care of one helps protect many others.

I know some people will say it's too late, or that many people already do it, or that this should be the government's job. Maybe. But I also think we can do our part instead of waiting for someone else.

Following simple rules, even if nobody is forcing us, is how communities protect places like this.

What do you think? If a cenote asked you not to wear sunscreen to help protect the water, would you do it for one day?

Looking for 1800+ chess players in Playa del Carmen ♟️ (Spanish practice welcome)

Hi everyone!

I'm looking for strong chess players (around 1800 Elo or higher, to play some serious games in Playa del Carmen.

I usually meet at Ah Cacao Chocolate Café on 5th Avenue. The idea is simply to enjoy good chess, analyze games afterward, and have interesting conversations.

If you're learning Spanish, that's a plus—we can switch between English and Spanish so you can practice naturally while playing.

No club, no fees, no tournament. Just good chess and good coffee.

If you're interested, leave a comment or send me a DM.

♟️ Classical, rapid or blitz—all are welcome.
