Water appearing at base of refrigerator from unknown source.

I have a older side-by-side KitchenAid refrigerator freezer. The door gasket on my freezer cracked at the bottom. Periodically, a large volume of water would appear under the freezer door. The gasket is no longer available from the factory and I cannot seem to find a replacement. I called several appliance houses and they could not help me either. I decided to flip the gasket upside down and reinstall it with the gap at the top. I used some small sections of duct tape to bridge the gap. I know it sounds Bush league but it seemed to work. I do get some small icicles now at the top of the freezer but other than that, it seems to work well. unfortunately once a week, I will still get a big dump of water on the floor. I know this because we are now keep a small towel at the edge of that door and I check it every day. No slow leak just a big dump. I cannot figure out where it is coming from. Could it be from an auto defrost cycle? I am at a loss as to what to do. The unit works fine other than this water problem. Does anyone have any suggestions?
