How to encourage independent play?

My newly 3 year old child is currently an only child. I think we’ve felt bad about and have overdone the attention. He is at my hip and talking to me 24/7. Right now independent play seems like a distant dream.

How can I encourage more independent play? I’ve seen lots of parents say they don’t at all play with their kids. I’m curious how this works exactly. I’d love to get him to a point where he doesn’t exclusively rely on us for entertainment but need help getting there.

Help. 🥺
