I want to show my kids how people in other countries actually live, not just the tourist version. How do you do that with young children?

I want real food AND my kids at the table.
I always feel like I need to compromise between a child-friendly place or a place that serves really good food. My children don’t need a kids menu and they are used to normal cutlery, glasses, dishes…
But I am not sure: would they rather have that and nuggets and fries than trying my food?
I have this romantic idea that you travel, come into contact with another (local) family and they invite you into their home for dinner.
Would you do it?
