I’m afraid my toaster toasted its engine

Update (7/1)— we got confirmation yesterday that we were getting a new engine (under the extended warranty). We went to the dealership today to get some more stuff out of our car and to talk to them about next steps and now we are currently sitting in a loaner 26 Seltos until ours comes back.

Ironically, my (retired) parents loaned us their (essentially) newish MY 23 Hyundai Tuscon (26,000 miles). I was about two miles from my house yesterday, on my out of town for work when the check engine light came on and the infotainment system told me a system malfunction was detected and I needed to take the car for inspection TODAY (their emphasis). Took it in and apparently they have a cooling system malfunction.

I’m not sure what I did in a past life to create a beef with Korean powertrains, but here we are…. Hopeful the seltos behaves until my toaster is returned!

2021 soul ex — 106,000 miles.

We bought her brand new, meticulous maintenance (other than tires—maintenance even completed at the dealership where it was bought). We noticed issues and had oil consumption tests back in late 2023/early 2024 and everything “was within our normal levels”. Got recall tested (no issues) and the software update in May of last year. In the meanwhile, checked the oil ourselves approx every 1,000 and added as/if needed.

Last oil change was in May of last month and less than 2,500 miles later—without any other notification/issue— suddenly flashing engine light and limp mode activated. Went about 3 miles to get someplace safe, checked the oil and bone dry. Added a qt, pulled the car from the gas pump where we pulled in to the parking spot next to it and waited 45 minutes before rechecking— still essentially bone dry. Got her towed to the dealership and we begin the process of getting the diagnosis tomorrow.

I’m hoping with the fact that we have all of the records (and I mean all but one receipt—we even have the window stickers still 🤣 ) that this is as a easy process as it can be. Obviously it could be something else, clearly, but if it quacks like a duck….
