How can I make these stitches better?

I am making a pair of socks using sock weight SW Merino wool/nylon yarn. The pattern is essentially 15 squares in the knit stitch that are all the same size with a decrease in the center of one side of each square. You then have to pull up loops from the side edges of squares you have already completed to begin making a new square to be in between/join those existing squares.

This is my first time making a pair of socks. I don't know if it's the yarn or my tension, or a combo of both, by my first return pass stitch is making it nearly impossible to figure out where in the hell to put my hook. I don't want bulky seams or irritating little blumpy spots & seams all throughout my socks, and I am far too type A to have randomly placed stitches along my seams. What can I do to make my 1st return pass stitches look better so I can more easily identify where to put my hook to uniformly pull up loops?
