Resources for 11 yr old still reading below grade level

My 11 yr old/5th grader has dyslexia and ADHD.

His school district has used the Acadience assessment for reading. This looks at word count, accuracy, retell, and maze (assessing meaning from text). He usually tests very well in retell and struggles most with accuracy. They test 3 times a year and he has almost always tested below grade level (with an occasional time or 2 where he tests and meets grade level).

Backstory:

Had an IEP put in place in 2nd grade for reading, had him tested by a neuropsychologist in 3rd grade, and he had a private reading tutor for a little over 2 years that went through the Spire reading program with him. This finished this past December.

He is about to finish 5th grade and is still testing below grade level in reading but he didn’t qualify for his IEP anymore as of March. I’m not sure where to go from here if he’s already done an Orton Gillingham program. Would love for him to eventually read at grade level.

I’m feeling a little defeated right now. Last year his end of year testing was one of the times he tested at grade level and I walked into summer being so happy for him. This summer I’m feeling like I need to figure out some more resources for him.

Edited to add: He has also struggled some in math (but not nearly as bad as reading). From the reading I’ve done, dyslexia can make things like math facts hard to memorize (it certainly was hard for him). From what I can tell, I don’t think it’s dyscalculia. I think it’s his dyslexia/ADHD combo. But if anyone also has math resources- I’d take those too. ☺️

Carry-on baggage weight limit for a family of 5?

I will be traveling with my family of 5 from CDG directly back to my home airport in the US. I have heard that sometimes at CDG they will weigh carry-ons and personal items.

We travel a lot and like to travel with carry-ons (much easier to manage smaller bags and public transportation with my 3 kids). We each travel with a backpack and then have 3 total carry-ons. Each carry-on bag will probably weigh more than the 12kg allowance given (I know the limit is for personal item + carry-on bag). My question is because we’d only be doing 3 carry-ons, how do they calculate if we’re over the weight limit? Would they allocate 60kg to our group of 5 and just make sure we’re under that?

Brussels to Waterloo Battlefield

My husband would really like to visit Waterloo Battlefield. I can see there are 2 options: take bus from Gare du Midi all the way or take the train to Braine l'Alleud and then transfer via bus W.

If timed well the train + bus option is much quicker than taking the bus all the way from Midi. But I'm not sure how to approach ticketing for this. I could buy the train tickets at the station but I'm not sure how to get tickets for bus W at Braine l'Alleud. Is that something we could buy at the station there? If I'm looking at it correctly, I think it is TEC that operates that bus. But I think this area is outside what would be covered in Brupass XL ticket so I don't think I could use that. Perhaps download the TEC app and purchase online? Would need bus tickets for 2 adults + 2 kids (ages 9 and 11).

Kids on metro/bus rides in Brussels

I will be traveling to Belgium with 2 kids between 6 and 11. It appears that kids are free on trains when accompanied by adults. I’m trying to figure out what to do for any metro/bus rides in Brussels. It looks like there’s a card they can get for 5 or 6 euros and then they’d be free to use the metro/bus for free. Is this worth the hassle for a 3 day stay? It looks like they would need to bring a physical photo for this card?

Any advance for those that have done it? Or is it simply easier to pay the adult fare for them?

We just booked a last minute trip for my family of 5 (3 kids: 11,9,5). We will be coming from Belgium and will have 3 nights in Paris (5/29-6/1) before flying home. I am struggling to find something affordable for us!! I’m trying to keep it under $500 a night.

We love to stay in Airbnb’s (we all do better when we have a little more space) but after reading the regulations in Paris I don’t think I want to risk it.

I just can’t seem to find a hotel that’s in a good location. I have looked for hours!! Having 5 people really makes it harder compared to 4 or less. The best I can find (price wise) is Aparthotel Adagio Paris Buttes Chaumont and Citadines La Défense Paris.

I hate that if I choose the Citadines La Defense it won’t have a Paris feel whatsoever. To its credit, I looked up the metro routes from there and it’s very easy to get to the major sites. The Aparthotel may feel a touch more like Paris but it would take longer to get everywhere.

My kids are pretty well traveled so they’re very accustomed to public transportation on our trips but they also have their limits so I want to be mindful of how far we are from sights.

We’ve been to Paris before (pre 3rd child) but I’m still very excited to return. Any hope for lodging? Anything better than what I’ve found? 😅

Side note: For public transportation, is it best to get the physical navigo cards for all 5 of us?
