Card art showcase: Alpha Thunderclap

Whilst photographing a selection of my personal collection I couldn’t help but pause at the Alpha stamped Thunderclap, released in the 2025 Alpha sets.

AZK-042 (*SR, Alpha)

It captures light so wildly differently depending on lighting and viewing angles. Coupled with the usual incredible Azuki TCG texturing and layering and it’s a real beauty to behold. As a photographer the hardest part of my job is to translate the magic I see with my eye to what you can see through my images, so hopefully this subtle angle change captures the light-play in a way that does this card justice.

Illustrated by the incredibly talented Tomugi, this has become a collector favorite across all Azuki TCG cards, and it’s not hard to see why. Purples, blues, vibrant whites and piercing reds, if there was ever a card worthy of a museum showcase, it would be this.

The single issue I have with this card? It’s not Offering to Stillstone.

Thanks for indulging me on my nerd-out about Azuki cards. Plenty more photographs to come over the following weeks.

Stillstone, but *Spicier* 😏

Recently I added two grails to the Offering to Stillstone collection: Invitational Offering to Stillstones, different back, different print, font, finish, the whole nine yards.

As part of the Invitational set of cards, these Offering to Stillstone variants instantly shoot up to joint favorites in my growing collection, alongside my factory miscut Stillstone.

I could sit and look at the differences forever - the clear font differential, the amazing contract in the reverse side of the cards, the feel and finish that doesn’t translate over digital images at all. I’m obsessed!

Thank you to Zhu for a great trade, these little froggies are forever safe in my growing army.

Appreciation of Art

Just a small gathering of photographs I captured of various cards in direct sunlight - key takeaways?

Foil is second to none, exact foil choice can go toe to toe with any card in the space.

Treatment and textures are a joy to discover and explore, at first subtle and discreet, but once you hit the right lighting it’s like discovering an entirely new geography in your hands.

What is your favorite card so far?

A Card Review: Offering to Stillstone

This is the definitive breakdown of the most remarkable, playable, and sensationally collectible AZK01 Card ever released - AZK01-107 Offering to Stillstone!

A vibrant and invigorating artwork crafted lovingly by Twisted Hand Studio, the illustration reflects a mystical scene of a stone-ruins frog statue holding aloft a ceremonial axe, glistening and almost magical water flowing elegantly from its mouth and crumbled dust or sand seeping from its perfect froggie hands. The card is printed on immaculately robust white-bordered card, providing players and collectors alike a study ‘rock-like’ card worthy of the most noble card battles. Indeed, as I believe it to be, this is Twisted Hand Studio’s Magnum Opus. Insurmountable.

This rocky froggie can save a player in a pinch, for if they lack an IKZ token this Offering temporarily grants one until the end of their turn. Sturdy and stable nobility to bring forth crushing victories to the most worthy of competitors. But, and I must stress, don’t froget that the ILZ token expires at the end of their turn. Temporary reprieve, though the Stillstone aura is anything but temporary.

Are you worthy of beholding such an Offering, and treating it with the reverie it deserves? If you're curious about the Azuki TCG check out tcg.azuki.com or find Gates Awakened in stores now.
