In Obsession, we see Bear make his infamous wish to be loved by Nikki, and the catastrophic consequences that follow. Along the way, we learn that Nikki isn’t really Nikki; the crazed and obsessed person Bear created with his wish isn’t the real Nikki. The real one is trapped in there, in a “sunken place,” desperate to escape her body even if it means her death.
But, imagine for a moment Bear didn’t inflict his wish on someone else. Imagine he had wished he was braver, smarter, more charismatic, more ambitious, to become the man a woman like Nikki would fall for.
This would be a morally better wish, because whatever the outcome at least Bear isn’t stealing another person’s life. But, let us assume he did change and become a smarter, braver, more charismatic man…
Does Bear get to be that man? Does he gain any of these features, or is his situation similar to Nikki? Is he in a sunken place, watching this “better” version of himself live his life?
Would this be the case no matter how minor the self improvement? If you wished you were a snappy dresser, do you become a sunken rider watching an identical copy of you live your life with a somewhat better fashion sense?
I picked up an army box of The Damned from Wargames Atlantic, and have been working on a scheme. I knew I didn’t want to do blood pact, but I was afraid a green scheme would look too regulation. But, I don’t know, I think you can tell they’re a scrofulous band of degenerates, right?
