P-toluensulfonic acid turning purple when heating
I am working with my first dean stark water trap. Was going to make anhydrous P-TsOH to use as a catalyst.
When heating the acid in toluene it turned pink and as heat rose it turned to dark purple. It looked like a lot of it dissolved at around 50 degrees C.
Around 70 degree C the acid started to sublimate and crystallise on the sides of the flask. A lot of the purple impurity stayed undissolved in the rbf.
I have not read about P-TsOH acting this way. I was expecting a slight red layer forming in the toluene.
No water was collected in the trap after heating to almost 110 degree C which is not whats to be expected from the monohydrate.
Anyone know what might cause this? Did the supplier send me something mislabeled? Its definitely an acid since it lowered pH in water.
