How do I remove this gas lift cylinder from my old office chair mechanism?

Hey everyone! I need some help with my office chair.

I have a Wakefit Gravita HighBack Office Chair. Wakefit sent me a replacement tilt/seat mechanism, so I now have the new mechanism ready to install.

The problem is that I need to remove the gas-lift cylinder (the long pole in the photos) from the old mechanism and fit it into the new one.

I can’t figure out how the cylinder is attached to the old mechanism. There doesn't seem to be a normal screw or bolt holding it in place.

How do I safely remove it? Is it just a tight friction/tapered fit? Do I need a pipe wrench or some other tool?

I've attached photos of the old mechanism and gas cylinder. Any advice from someone who's done this before would be really appreciated!
