Long shot…might be the longest
In 2003 I visited Galway, and it was the best experience of my entire life despite losing my passport, and a host of other things. It was day three, and as a result, due to the era, we planted in Galway to get everything we needed from fed ex before heading back to America. My best friend and I were there for ten days. And I wouldn’t change a thing.
Day three we went to a club, I think it might have been the gaff…but I don’t remember for sure, but I was wallowing in my misfortune. My friend was dancing and having the time of her life while I pouted. My Irish heritage traces back to Connaught, Sligo, etc. so I was sure I couldn’t be this unlucky in the land of my lineage, right? I know, I know…says every annoying American tourist ever.
This was right when the smoking indoors ban was about to begin. *P.s. One of my favorite Galway moments was when this pub bartender asked an older gentleman to smoke outside, and he continued to do so while motioning to the barkeep that he couldn’t hear, and winked at me. Fricken love you guys. As a result, I was stress chain smoking inside while I could. It was just then that this very kind person approached me for a light. No pick up lines, I don’t even know if I’d pick up on it anyway, as low as I was. Just a person who listened to my wild story, made me laugh and forget about what I thought was going to be the worst trip of my life. He invited to celebrate St. Paddy’s, which also happened to be my birthday five days later. I had no way to get in touch with him…I was 21 and abroad for the first time. But he was so kind, not forward, just kind. All I remember is his name was Jeremy, but went by Jerry and he said he worked at the Radisson. I think about that a lot because I truly had the best time there, despite all of the challenges and that exchange changed my experience for the better. Truly an example of the people of Galway. I’m glad we had to stay put, my friend and I met so many incredible locals and local pub owners. My first and last snakebite 😂. Love you, Galway and thank you Jerry. For making me laugh and lifting my spirits and teaching me that the worst had already happened. And there was so much more to explore. I can’t wait to return with my family someday. ♥️
