FF / FG

Honest question.

If you're voting for FF / FG tomorrow - and you're under 30, why?

I get older generations voting for them - settled with their houses etc.

They offer literally nothing for younger generations.

I'm genuinely curious why people keep throwing shit at the wall, hoping it sticks

City Council going for the bare minimum in 30kph streets

Despite the RSA only last week releasing a map showing the many, many collisions around the city and the devastating, life long impacts they can have, the council have indicated that the only locations where 30kph will apply will be directly outside schools and within housing estates only along with a handful of other areas, rather than city wide on all routes where vulnerable users interact with vehicles

More 30km/h speed limit zones to be implemented in Galway City

You can view the RSA collision map here

Now, unfortunately the RSA site doesn't allow you to look at the collision data by road user type, so I pulled the data from it and made my own. Below shows just the collisions for pedestrians and cyclists in their data

Galway City - RSA Collision Data - Pedestrians & Cyclists 2016-2024

So why the big deal you ask. Simply put, a vehicle hitting someone at 50k results in a 50% fatality rate whereas with a 30kph impact, you are looking at a 90% survival rate with far less severe injuries

When we talk about "serious injuries" from road collisions, we're talking about injuries along the lines of the following:

  • Traumatic Brain & Head Injuries: Concussions, skull fractures, and acquired brain damage.
  • Spinal & Neck Trauma: Injuries to the cervical spine that can lead to permanent damage or paralysis.
  • Bone Fractures: Any broken bone, particularly complex, compound, or multiple fractures (e.g., severe leg or pelvic breaks).
  • Internal Injuries: Damage to vital internal organs.
  • Crush Injuries: Any bodily crushing, often sustained by vulnerable road users (cyclists, pedestrians, or motorcyclists).
  • Severe Lacerations: Deep, severe cuts and tears.
  • Severe General Shock: Medical trauma requiring active, severe shock management.

If you find this acceptable, fine, don't do anything. If on the other hand, you don't believe the proposed changes go far enough, and instead kids should be able to get all the way home without interacting with 50kph vehicles, then reach out to the City Councilors. You can find contact details for all of them here.

To make it easier to reach out to them, I'll add a comment below with all their GCC email addresses that you can simply copy and paste into an email

All of the Galway TDs who voted against sanctions on Israel last night. In the last few days Israel have kidnapped a number of Irish citizens, including the presidents sister, and have released video footage of their army assaulting Irish women. These TDs seem to believe this is acceptable.

The math is not mathing

We recently made an update to our renovation calculator. You can still manually calculate the cost of a renovation in Ireland, but now you can also use AI Snapshot to pull the data for you. You just have to paste a URL from MyHome.ie or Sherry Fitzgerald or other agents (except daft 😔) or upload a photo of a kitchen or bathroom. My thinking was if I am at a home viewing to buy it can give me a quick sense of how much it could cost.

I'd love for you guys to check it out and let me know what you think! Any feedback is welcomed.

But also, I built this because I'm in the market for a home and every other house needs a renovation. Now that I actually know the costs, the math is just not mathing? Are people out there genuinely doing full renovations and just paying the extra cost? Or is everyone just... not doing them? If you did do a full reno, was it worth it?

Curious to know!

Thanks!

25 Years ago the same arguments about the Ring Road were happening....

https://www.connachttribune.ie/lifestyle/galway-in-days-gone-by-7933461

>
“Many people feel that the road is really about opening-up land for development and there is huge merit in looking at other options, including a light rail service, park and ride facilities. and improved public transport,” said Hands Across the Corrib spokeswoman Jacqui O’Dowd.

>“Many people believe that a whole new transport initiative should be looked at before any major decision is taken.

>“For example, there is no public transport across the Quincentenary Bridge at present and there is no awards system in place for people who are car-pooling.”

>She said that improved public transport would greatly reduce traffic between the east and west sides of the city while the option of a light rail network would eliminate any need for a new road bridge across the Corrib.

25 years and very little done other than saying we need the ring road. Imagine what could have been done in that time if we had invested in other options instead of just sitting on our hands waiting for the road to be built.

Cylcing infrastructure is driving infrastructure. Public Transport infrastructure is driving infrastructure.

Because they takes cars off the road and reduce traffic for those who want or need to drive.

Building solely for cars helps no one - induces traffic and limits transport.

Finally a list of Galway West candidates' pitches in one place

RTE had a decent list of candidates the last day, but finally I have one in my hand now when the paper came in the door this morning.

I only wish the advertiser put empty tick boxes next to the photos so we could do a dry run for preferences for voting day. I also wish their website wasn't so shite, coz it took me ages to find this online version.

There are some total liúdramáins in this list, but sure it's Galway...

PS

I love the WOOW guy who won't give transfer advice because noone knows anything about street cleaning. Legend.

Whose transfers are gonna elect a TD on the final vote?

Tomorrow is Voting Day

Just a friendly reminder from your lad on the street that tomorrow is voting day and if you can do one thing this Friday, it’s to go out and vote.

If people want a lift to the polling station or need help getting there, just comment below and I’ll reach out but don’t forget to vote. (You know who not to vote for)

Why don't people like Sinn Féin?

Genuinely curious. For context I am not overly familiar with them so don't have an opinion either way. I just notice that many people dont like them.

Do you work from home and find it lonely?

Hey Folks,

I was curious here if anyone works remotely or hybrid and can find it lonely/isolating sometimes and would be interested in meeting up?

Parkmore Traffic

What would be the best time to go home (based in Westside) from Parkmore (where work is) by bus? I don’t have much flexibility, I work from 9-5 but there is some leniency there. What’s the rush hour range? It takes over an hour to get home because of traffic. What’s a better reasonable time to leave at? Would it be okay at 4 pm for example or 6 pm etc.?

An unusual post.

Hello, yesterday people may have seen a man stumbling around County Hall and around the rugby club that was me. I would just like to clarify I wasn’t drunk or anything like that. Im very embarrassed. I had an issue with the medication I started recently if if anyone sees an AirPod in the road or in that area, please let me know.

Information on Kyne

I'm listening to friends and online, hearing some people seeing the idea that Kyne has done no wrong. I just want to post this link for information - I have no wish to influence but this does seem to have been largely ignored by rte etc

Wilson’s House/Céim Eile centre

Does anyone know what this place is by Merlin Park? Walked up to it out of curiosity (I’m a nosy bollox) and it’s gated off and loads of CCTV.
