UPDATE/SOLVED: Got the broken piece out! Removed the cap on the drive side, turned out the axle is hollow all the way through. Pushed a long threaded rod through from the drive side and tapped the broken bit out from behind. Now working on the incredible tight axle itself. Im gonna try with an impact driver next, and then the allen socket on a breaker bar, more suggestions? I'm honestly humbled on how many people had suggestions about this problem, many thanks 😄 ❤️

I was tightening the rear axle of my MTB with a torque wrench (1/4" bits) and accidentally cranked past the click without noticing. That left the axle seized extremely tight and snapped the 5mm bit off inside the axle head. It's a Newmen thru-axle.

That first broken piece was sitting loose enough that I could pull it out with a magnet. I then grabbed another 5mm bit (apparently a lower quality one, from a discount store) to try to loosen the axle, and that one snapped off too. This second piece is jammed absolutely solid and won't come out with anything.

As far as I can tell there is nothing to loosen on the other side. Just a smooth cone shaped tip, no hex, no flats, nothing to grip. The only place you can turn this axle is the hex socket where the broken piece is now stuck.

What I've tried so far:

• Magnet. Worked on the first piece, this one won't budge.
• Center punch and small taps to walk it counterclockwise. Nothing.
• Tapping directly on the broken piece with a hammer, trying to drive it further in. The axle is hollow so in theory that should be possible. Nothing.
• Cutting a small slot into the piece with an angle grinder so I could tap it around. Nothing.
• Trying to pop it loose with an awl. Nothing.
• Drilling it out. The broken piece is hardened steel and my HSS drills just skate off without biting.

I've called three different bike shops and none of them really saw any options over the phone. One of them did say I could bring it in and that they like a challenge, but I suspect that could get expensive fast.

I've seen diamond drill bits exist and I'm wondering if that's worth a shot before I go any further. Has anyone dealt with this before? Photos attached of the axle head with the stuck piece in it and the smooth cone shaped end on the other side.

I couldn't get the cap on the cone side off either, I have the impression it holds something of the derailleur in place.

UPDATE/OPGELOST: Het afgebroken stukje is eruit! Kapje aan de aandrijfkant verwijderd, bleek dat de as helemaal hol is. Een lange draadstang er vanaf de aandrijfkant doorheen gestoken en het afgebroken stukje er van achteren uit getikt. Nu ben ik bezig met de as zelf, die zit nog ongelofelijk strak vast. Ik ga het hierna proberen met een slagschroevendraaier, en daarna met een inbusdop op een breekijzer/lange ratel, nog meer suggesties? Enorm bedankt voor het meedenken😄 ❤️

Ik was mijn achteras van mijn mtb aan het vastdraaien met een momentsleutel (1/4" bits) en ben per ongeluk voorbij de klik doorgedraaid zonder het te merken. Daardoor is de as extreem strak komen te zitten en is de 5mm bit afgebroken in de kop van de as. Het is een Newmen thru-axle.

Dat eerste afgebroken stukje lag er nog los genoeg in dat ik het met een magneet eruit kon halen. Daarna heb ik een andere 5mm bit gepakt (blijkbaar eentje van lagere kwaliteit, Action) om de as los te proberen te draaien, en die is dus ook afgebroken. Dit tweede stukje zit muurvast en komt er met niets meer uit.

Voor zover ik kan zien kan ik aan de andere kant niks losdraaien. Alleen een glad, conisch uiteinde, geen zeskant, geen platte vlakken, niets om grip op te krijgen. De enige plek waar je aan deze as kunt draaien is de inbus waar het afgebroken stukje nu in zit.

Wat ik al geprobeerd heb:

• Magneet. Werkte bij het eerste stukje, dit stukje beweegt niet.
• Centerpons en kleine tikjes om het linksom los te lopen. Niets.
• Direct op het afgebroken stukje tikken met een hamer met het doel om hem naar binnen de tikken, die as is hol dus zou opzich wel kunnen. Niets.
• Met de haakse slijper een gleufje in het stukje geslepen om het rond te kunnen tikken. Niets.
• Met een priem geprobeerd het los te laten schieten. Niets.
• Uitboren. Het afgebroken stukje is gehard staal en mijn HSS-boortjes glijden er gewoon overheen zonder te snijden.

Ik heb drie verschillende fietsenmakers gebeld en telefonisch zag geen van hen echt opties. Eentje gaf wel aan dat ik hem langs kon brengen en dat ze wel van een uitdaging houden, maar ik vermoed dat dat snel in de papieren kan lopen.

Ik zag dat er diamantboortjes bestaan en vraag me af of dat het proberen waard is voordat ik nog verder ga. Heeft iemand dit weleens meegemaakt? Foto's erbij van de kop van de as met het vastzittende stukje erin en het gladde conische uiteinde aan de andere kant.

Dat kapje aan de conische kant heb ik niet los kunnen krijgen, ik heb het idee dat dit iets van de derailleur op zn plaats houd.
