Trying to understand why vet is recommending full amputation
Hi all, I adopted a 6 month old kitty almost 3 months ago. I was told she was born without her back leg. She has about 75% of the leg. She’s extremely playful and active and gets around fine, but a couple of weeks ago I noticed a small wound on the end of her stump. I was already taking her to the vet for vaccinations and asked them about it. They basically brushed it off saying it looked fine.
I took her again for follow up appointment 2 weeks later, and now they’re saying we should consider a full amputation “if she keeps using it”. I’m confused how we went from no big deal to let’s take the whole leg. Also she’s not using it, I think it’s just scraping on the ground when she runs.
Anyways I’ve seen some similar posts here and the comments are also mentioning to do a full amputation. I guess I’m just trying to understand it. This is the first cat I’ve owned and I feel guilty putting her through surgery and changing the way she’s already learned to get around, just to avoid scrapes? My vet seems pretty certain this is the only solution and I’m just trying to wrap my head around it. I would really appreciate some advice and input, thank you
